Welcome back to our VIP video series "Off the Beaten Path," featuring my friend Christian Toto of Hollywood in Toto! Christian and I start off our week by discussing stories and ideas that may fly under our radar, in culture, politics, sports, and more. Plus, Christian previews his latest podcast at HiT.

Does Hollywood still know how to tell stories that matter? Christian and Ed discuss the new film Song Sung Blue, and why it hearkens back to films that connect to people in ways that truly matter. (Ed's review is here.) The film gets the story of Lightning & Thunder mainly accurate, but it perfectly demonstrates that Hollywood can still tell stories that matter and that treat real people with respect and care. And maybe Hollywood is figuring this out, at least in small ways. Suddenly the Marvel Comic Universe is dumping wokery and celebrating ... fatherhood? We discuss why Judd Apatow used to make these connections, and why he's missing them now. We wrap up with the failure of the Time Bandits series, attacks on It's a Wonderful Life, and why it may be a great partner film to Song Sung Blue.
