There were bound to be some outbound waves rippling and unsettling the normal, organized German political landscape after this past weekend's disastrous regional elections in Berlin and the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, but holy SMOKES.
I know most observers expected the excitement to continue in the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) power struggles, as wounded Chancellor Friedrich Merz does everything in his power to cling to his leadership position. And calls for his resignation have grown louder after the embarrassing shellacking in the Baltic state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where the CDU was, for the first time, eliminated from any representation in a regional Landtag because they could not corral enough votes to meet the threshold for a single seat.
Absolute mortification.
In a new poll, more than half of the Germans who responded want the chancellor to resign.

The former General Secretary of Merz's own CDU Party, Hendrik Wüst, is publicly calling for the chancellor's figurative head, even as he is being mentioned as a possible replacement.
This brings up another issue, as Herr Wüst is the CDU leader in Germany's most populous state, North-Rhein-Westphalia, which probably gives him the idea he has an edge on the competition.
But Herr Wüst is dealing with his own popularity struggles at home...

For its part, the AfD pounced on the news immediately, sensing blood in the water.

What has really been the gobsmacker is something Merz said, and it is happening in concert with Die Linke's (The Left) victory in the Berlin elections. Die Linke is basically the old East German communist party cleaned up in 21st-century threads. On Sunday, they dethroned the CDU, which had been at the helm for the past three years, by running on a radical platform of ideas like expropriating private property for more government-run housing.
Die Linke's successful campaign had some savvy advisors working with them who know all about attractively packaging socialist/communist promises to suck female voters right in.
...2) In Berlin, the CDU managed to squander the clear polling dominance it enjoyed throughout 2025 to finish in second place with just 18.8% of the vote – nearly seven points behind Die Linke. That is what a series of extremely stupid and unnecessary local scandals alongside association with the most unpopular Chancellor in the history of the Federal Republic can do to a party.
Zohran Mamdani’s advisers and campaign strategists assisted Die Linke in their left-populist Berlin campaign, which enjoyed particularly strong appeal among young voters. Assuming some late-breaking turbulence caused by the corruption and indiscipline that are typical of Die Linke do not derail things, they will form a government with the Greens and the Social Democrats.
