Circling the Wagons Around the Few Columbus Statues Left

Monday is Columbus Day.

And that's the day it is, has been, and will always be to me.

President Trump likes the sound of that, too.

YMMV depending on your degree of woke or ethnic umbrage.

The plucky Italian explorer who 'sailed the sea in ships of three' in four voyages spanning 1492 to 1502 was once credited as 'discovering America.' The Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria - one carrack and two tiny caravels, as they called them. It took tremendous courage.

You don't appreciate just how small they are until you've had a chance to see one of the to-scale replicas.

One of them, the La Nina, had a terrifying ride through our bay and into an inlet during Hurricane Sally on 16 September 2020. In video taken during the storm, you can get an idea of how tiny the ship is. Four crew members who heroically stayed with the ship through the entire terrifying night survived, and were grateful to be beached in one piece the next morning.

Nowadays, Columbus is politely given props for 'connecting the Old World (Europe, Africa, and Asia) and the New World (North and South America)' by the 'Indigenous Peoples Day' lobby. That is, when they aren't busy demonizing him for wiping out peace-loving natives by proving to everyone that ships didn't fall off an edge after going so far, and pointing out which direction these new continents could be found.

OKAY

Everything from 1492 to 2025 is exactly same-same to progressives. And if history doesn't reflect it, they will make history changes to do so.

This past spring, I noted that Chicago's Bear of Little Brains, having accomplished very little on his own, was dumping one more task on his 'ruin the city' plate. Brandon Johnson was going to prioritize the removal of the remaining, highly offensive Christopher Columbus statues from the few parks left that they graced in Chicago.

This would automatically assuage some of drawbacks of the crime and high cost of living in that hellhole in his intellectually challenged estimation.

It might be painfully expensive, and you might have been mugged and/or shot in front of your apartment last night, but it would no longer hurt as badly because the statues of the colonizer who caused your city-living woes have been taken down. Melted away, like all your Chicago cares are magically going to.

See? All better.

San Francisco has come under fire for hiding their Columbus away, and, amazingly enough, people want it back.

Good luck protecting it if it makes a return to a city pedestal with that bunch of radicals there. But bless them for trying.

In what is a refreshing kind of proactive resistance effort to the anti-Columbus, anti-history movement, it seems outgoing New York City mayor Eric Adams is doing what he can to protect NYC's Columbus-loving heritage from the clutches of his presumptive incoming Communist mayoral replacement, Zohran Mamdani.

I can't imagine why Adams would worry. Mamdani is so perky cute and has that nice, big, old smile.

...two anarchists who dodged the draft during WWI by fleeing to Mexico then came back and murdered two people. They were best friends with the anarchist terrorist Mario Buda, who bombed Wall Street and killed 40 people.

RIGHT?!

To Adams' credit, he is working to throw a ring of 'historical designation' protection around the statues before he leaves, hopefully preventing a power-mad Commie/Socialist/whatever from doing what comes naturally to them when they finally reach the top.

Outgoing New York City Mayor Eric Adams is moving to protect a pair of Christopher Columbus statues amid threats from mayoral front-runner Zohran Mamdani, who has called for them to be toppled.

Adams, who steps down at the end of the year after choosing not to run for reelection, told the New York Post that his administration plans to seek a historic designation for the Italian explorer’s monuments at Columbus Circle and Astoria’s Columbus Square to prevent them from being removed.

“The beauty of New York City is that we celebrate and respect all our diverse communities and cultural heritage,” Adams told the newspaper Tuesday. “As mayor of the city with one of the largest Italian populations in the world, I am proud that we celebrate Italian American heritage, today and every day.”

...The Columbus Statue in Columbus Circle, built in 1896, was designated federal and state historic landmark status in 2018, following support from then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who lost the Democratic mayoral primary to Mamdani and is now running as an independent in the general election. But the Columbus statue in Astoria Square, unveiled in 1941, doesn’t have landmark protection, the Post reported.

Critics have condemned the 15th-century Italian explorer as a white supremacist who touched off centuries of European oppression and the subjugation of Indigenous peoples. Columbus supporters, meanwhile, say the statues are an important symbol of Italian American heritage.

So that's pretty cool and a worthy effort.

It's time for the perpetually aggrieved Left to stop acting like the Taliba...oh, who am I talking about?

Progressives would have been out there happily helping light the fuses on the Buddhas if only the hairy goatherders had asked them.

Even if you don't have the day off on Monday, have a good one.

If we thought our job in pushing back against the Academia/media/Democrat censorship complex was over with the election, think again. This is going to be a long fight. Ed, David, John, and I are here for it.
