Gun Control: The Long March Back Out Of The Institutions

As I noted a couple of weeks ago, the Trump Administration rolled back the the Biden regime's administrative policy of reporting veterans who sought medical or mental health help to the National Instant Check System (NICS).  The policy effectively canceled the Second Amendment rights of veterans, without any sort of non-administrative process, for having sought the help to which they were entitled as veterans.

It was a good start.

And now, there's a solid follow-up in the works.   The Biden administration's view that "gun violence" is a public health issue, rather than a criminal justice issue, is about to get de-fanged.

Among the 10,000 layoffs in the Department of Health and Human Services, the workforce at the Centers for Disease Control is being cut by a little over 2,000 workers - and the office that ran the "public health" attack on the Second Amendment is a prime target.

The Associated Press reports:

Around 2,400 jobs were expected to be cut from the CDC, which works to prevent diseases caused by infections, genetics, environmental poisons and other causes.

Many of the layoffs reported were in areas involving deaths and injuries from things other than infectious diseases. That included programs that track and prevent asthma, smoking, gun violence, climate change and other health threats. The center that researches and protects worker health was largely decimated, people at the agency said.

According to the NRA's "Shooting News Weekly," the cuts fell particularly hard on offices in the Centers for Disease Control that weren't actually particularly focused on...diseases:

The cuts to CDC included a reduction in force targeting the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. Gun rights supporters may recognize the NCIPC as the epicenter of the CDC’s longstanding anti-gun efforts. The Associated Press lamented, “Many of the layoffs reported were in areas involving deaths and injuries from things other than infectious diseases. That included programs that track and prevent… gun violence.”

The NCIPC was primarily engaged in collecting data and massaging it into a suitable shape to manufacture a "public health" case against Americans 2nd Amendment gun rights.  The Deep State has spent a lot of years cultivating the CDC as a force against the 2nd Amendment:

In May 1993, CDC released a report titled “Injury Control in the 1990s: A National Plan for Action.” A portion titled “Support for the National Plan” explained that a host of “organizations participated in the development or review of the national plan” and listed Handgun Control, Inc. and CPGV as supporters of the document.

The CDC plan read like a gun-control lobby wish list, recommending, “New legislative and regulatory efforts to be considered are to prohibit the manufacture, importation, and sale of handguns except in special circumstances; establish a national waiting period for all purchases of firearms, coupled with a mandatory criminal record background check; establish nationwide restrictive licensing of handgun owners whereby a handgun license would be granted only when a clear, legitimate need for possessing a handgun is demonstrated (e.g. for professional use).”

And Big Left is not at all happy about seeing a generation of work canceled in the blink of a DOGE.

Mother Jones, among others, is fuming:

An employee I’ll call Amanda (she didn’t want me to use her name for fear of retribution) works in the Web-Based Injury and Statistics Query and Reporting System (WISQARS) a team within the Injury Center that is responsible for processing all the data around injuries, including both fatal and nonfatal injuries caused by guns. Her branch of 40 employees all received RIF notices. “The cost analysis, the return on investment, all of the non-fatal and fatal data processing that goes to our lobbyists, our congressmen, our decision-makers, senators—all of that is gone,” she said. Her team also provides data that determine the leading causes of injury-related deaths.

And Kris Brown, president of "Brady", was not amused:

The dismantling of CDC’s injury data collection team is nothing short of a public health catastrophe, and the latest strategic move to consolidate information control under President Trump. CDC’s WISQARS is a crucial tool that informs our understanding of America’s gun violence epidemic. Without it, we’re cast into the dark as to the scope of the number one killer of kids in this country. But this latest assault doesn’t come as a surprise; it tracks completely with the administration’s autocratic tendencies. Stemming the flow of knowledge is a tactic that has been deployed throughout history to control the public, and today’s news is a prime example of history repeating itself.

“As Trump continues to amass a collection of incredibly dangerous and reckless moves that threaten our public safety — yet unsurprisingly fuel gun industry profits — his vision is becoming increasingly clear: A government that has no regard for science or your freedom from violence.

It's another great step toward getting this nation to stop punishing citizens, and start prosecuting criminals.
