It’s nice to be able to acknowledge a major corporation for doing the right thing. In this case, it’s Walmart and a donation the corporation is making to help provide medical humanitarian aid to Israelis.
Walmart announced a pledge of a $1M donation to Magen David Adom in a statement sent out to Walmart associates and partners on Friday. The corporation also pledged a $1M grant to the U.S. Holocaust Museum.
“As you all know, throughout these horrific and inhuman attacks by Hamas, Magen David Adom has played a critical role in providing medical aid to victims. To show support for all persons affected by these tragedies in the region, the Walmart Foundation is committing $1m. in funding to MDA for emergency services to save lives,” the statement read.
Walmart’s commitment to aiding those in need extends beyond its contribution to MDA. Last week, the Walmart Foundation pledged an additional $1m. grant to the US Holocaust Museum, showing the company’s dedication to supporting initiatives that promote understanding and commemorate historical atrocities.
Magen David Adom is Israel’s national emergency medical, disaster, ambulance and blood bank service.
Walmart is also encouraging its employees to get involved in humanitarian efforts by contributing to charitable causes. It will match employee donations, potentially up to $3M in the United States. This will provide critical support to humanitarian relief organizations.
This is a smart business decision for Walmart. The humanitarian aid will be greatly useful for Israel during this time of war but also, Walmart has business ties to Israel. The Walmart Global Tech branch is an employer of Israelis. Walmart is invested in several Israeli tech companies. It has acquired several more in the past five years. Walmart has extended its support since the war began, offering access to counseling services and providing meal allowances. Associates are encouraged to work from home as they need to, to remain safe.
“These attacks have directly and tragically impacted us, our friends, and our families. But Walmart Global Tech Israel is not alone. We are part of a resilient Israeli tech ecosystem that stands strong and proud during these tough times, and we are part of a global Walmart family who share the same values and commitment to our customers, members, and one another. It is these characteristics that strengthen us, even at times of great difficulty,” the statement read.
“In these days of heartbreak and uncertainty, I am thankful and proud of our teams in Israel who, despite everything, continue to support each other as one Walmart family. This is who we are and how we will prevail,” the statement continued. “Our hearts go out to colleagues, partners, and the communities in which we serve and live.”
Other companies have come forward to issue messages of support for Israel to its employees and some have also announced donations. For example, UBS announced a fundraising appeal last week through the UBS Optimus Foundation to support emergency humanitarian relief. The results so far are $10M in donations pledged. The corporation pledged to match donations. Google and Alphabet pledged $8 million in grants to nonprofits that are providing relief to civilians affected in Israel and Gaza.
Oracle also announced a $1 Million donation to Magen David Adom. “In addition, we have launched an internal campaign among our Oracle employees worldwide to support the emergency operations of this vital organization in the country. We are also make our cutting-edge technology available to the security forces here to ensure that justice prevails.”
Mastercard reportedly told staff on 10/11/23 that it would offer a 1:1 match for donations of $25 or more up to $15,000 per employee. The Mastercard internal giving site lists Magen David Adom and Leket Israel, which focuses on hunger and food security, as suggested organizations.
In an internal email, PricewaterhouseCoopers Chairman Tim Ryan said the accounting firm is “making an initial $250K donation to the Red Cross for the support and relief efforts in the region working directly with Magen David Adom, the Israeli Red Cross and the Palestinian Red Crescent Society.”
It’s good to be able to see those who have the resources step up and help the fight against evil.
