Ingrid Lewis-Martin is the chief advisor to New York City Mayor Eric Adams. On Sunday, she called for Joe Biden to close the southern border. My, how times have changed.
New York has a Right to Shelter law and it is a proud sanctuary city. Well, NYC used to be a proud sanctuary city before all the illegal aliens showed up. The first to cry foul when the current flood of illegal aliens began was Mayor Adams. He began by name-calling Governor Abbott and calling for more federal money to handle them. If the city is a sanctuary city, shouldn’t it have the resources and supplies it needs to handle people coming to New York City? But, no, that wasn’t the case. What shelter that was available quickly filled up and illegal aliens were put up in nice hotels in Manhattan. Adams has been trying to set up tent camps for the illegals but now they are accustomed to the hotel life and won’t quietly go to the tents. Did a mayor of a sanctuary city not think of that?
Ms. Lewis-Martin articulated a new message for illegal aliens – go some place else. She noted that 116,000 illegal migrants came to the city in 18 months. More than 60,000 are still in the city’s care. The Adams administration is trying to change the city’s right to shelter law. The change would be that the shelter law would not include new migrants. This is a stunning reversal to what both Mayor Adams and Governor Hochul who, at first, welcomed the illegal aliens in order to jab a thumb in Governor Abbott’s eye. Lewis-Martin made the comments on Sunday as she discussed the Biden border crisis.
‘It would alleviate it to the extend that others wouldn’t be so ready and able to come to New York City because they know, “they’re not going to provide us with shelter,”‘ Martin said when asked changing the right to shelter law. ‘We have to find a way to make them understand, we’re no longer responsible for you, you need to find other means. Go to another state.’
However, Marin added that the federal government should ultimately be in control of the situation as she demanded the borders be closed: ‘We need the federal government, the Congress members, the Senate, and the president to do its job: Close the borders,’ she told PIX11.
Now, why didn’t anyone think of demanding the federal government close the borders? Welcome to the party, pal.
Today during a White House press briefing, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre blamed Republicans for politicizing the border crisis. You can’t make this stuff up. Democrats, including Joe Biden, accuse people who expect secure borders of being racist and xenophobic. What about these New York Democrats?
What about former President Bill Clinton? He is focusing on the Right to Shelter law and he (wrong-headedly) wants the illegal aliens to get work permits ASAP.
Meanwhile Clinton has now backed Adams’ and governor Kathy Hochul’s bid to change the shelter law, telling 77 WABC radio’s The Cats Roundtable, ‘It’s broken. We need to fix it… It doesn’t make any sense.’
‘They come here, and we’re supposed to shelter people who can’t get work permits for six months. We need to change that,’ he added. ‘They ought to work. They need to begin working, paying taxes and paying their way. Most of these people have no interest in being on welfare.’
Adams has asked a judge to amend the right to shelter law, but the issue is still in courts.
Never fear. The Deputy Mayor for Communications jumped in to tamp down Martin’s remarks.
Deputy Mayor for Communications Fabien Levy quickly walked back Martin’s comments about the border, clarifying the mayor believes that ‘of course this nation should continue to welcome immigrants — both those seeking asylum and those who are not.’
That is what Democrats do – they conflate legal and illegal immigration. They are not serious partners in immigration debates. In the meantime, it is entertaining see light bulbs going off for some elected officials who now face illegal immigration problems. It’s all a drop in the bucket to what border states face every single day. Joe Biden doesn’t care.
