There is still one month left in FY 2022 — yet an all-time record has been acknowledged by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). In the month of August, there were 203,598 migrant encounters at the border. This brings the number of total encounters at the border for FY 2022 to 2,150,370.

For the first time ever, the number of migrant encounters at the border has exceeded two million in one fiscal year. The total number is almost 25% more than last year’s total. Again, there is still one more month to go. For comparison, in the fiscal year 2020, there were fewer than 500,000 illegal migrant encounters at the border.

As usual, it was Bill Melugin, a reporter for FNC, that delivered the bad news. He and his team are the one crew on the border in Texas day in and day out. Other media crews only show up when there is a story happening that is unavoidable for coverage.

The majority of the illegal migrants are coming from three countries – Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba. In August, more than 55,000 migrants apprehended were from those countries.

“Failing communist regimes in Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba are driving a new wave of migration across the Western Hemisphere, including the recent increase in encounters at the southwest U.S. border,” CBP Commissioner Chris Magnus said in a statement.

The inflow from those three countries marks a 175% increase from the same time last year.

CPB noted that while crossings at the southern border are at an all-time high, the number of people originally from Mexico and northern Central America has decreased for the third consecutive month and even fallen 43% from August 2021.

The majority of migrants apprehended are single adults. The report states that due to Title 42 expulsions, many migrants try to enter the U.S. multiple times. The number of repeat crossers may overstate the numbers but the encounters still require an expenditure of resources by law enforcement at the southern border.

In total, there were 203,598 encounters along the southwest land border in August, a 1.7 percent increase compared to July. Of those, 22 percent involved individuals who had at least one prior encounter in the previous 12 months.

More than two-thirds (69 percent) of all southwest land border encounters were single adults, with 140,210 encounters in August, a 4.2 percent increase compared to July.

73,153 encounters, 36 percent of the total, were processed for expulsion under Title 42 at the southwest land border. 130,445 encounters were processed under Title 8 at the southwest land border.

66,815 encounters involving single adults (48 percent of all single adult encounters) were processed for expulsion under Title 42, with 73,396 processed under Title 8.

6,116 encounters involving family unit individuals (12 percent of all family unit individuals) were processed for expulsion under Title 42, with 45,609 processed under Title 8.

The numbers of unaccompanied minors and families are decreasing ever so slightly.

Encounters of unaccompanied children decreased 14 percent, with 11,365 encounters in August compared with 13,278 in July. In August, the average number of unaccompanied children in CBP custody was 422 per day, compared with an average of 562 per day in July.

Encounters of family unit individuals decreased by one percent from 52,078 in July to 51,725 in August —which is 40 percent decrease from the peak of 86,631 in August 2021.

One thing in this report that jumps out is the fact that the Biden administration is actually trying to take credit for removing or expelling more migrants this year than any previous year. Hello? The reason for that is because there have been more encounters than ever before due to the porous border. That’s not something Team Biden should be boasting about. The reason DHS has expelled or repatriated a larger number of migrants than are still in proceedings because DHS simply releases the migrants into the country. They are not detained and held in facilities along the border because there is no room.

CBP Nationwide Total Encounters for FY22TD through August stand at 2,493,723, for the Southwest Border alone that number stands at 2,150,244.

For this fiscal year to date, repatriations and expulsions total 1,300,467, which means we have expelled or repatriated a larger number than are still in proceedings.
More individuals encountered at the border will be removed or expelled this year than any previous year.

The Biden border crisis is real and it is intentional. A slight decrease in a category or two does not mean the crisis is slowing. Kamala Harris can say the border is secure all she wants but that doesn’t make it true. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre can say the Biden administration inherited a broken system at the border from the previous administration all she wants but that doesn’t make it true. The previous administration put in place agreements with Mexico that relieved the overcrowding at the border and discouraged migrants from coming to the border. The reason they come now is because they know the border is open and they will be allowed to stay once they get here.

Joe Biden issued the invitation as he campaigned for president. He framed it as compassion but there is nothing compassionate about the Biden border crisis. There is a humanitarian crisis and a national security crisis along the border. Drug cartels are bringing in an unprecedented amount of drugs like fentanyl and Americans are dying. The damage from Biden’s policies is catastrophic, and there is no desire from the president to change anything. That means voters will have to change things in the upcoming election cycle.
