California Dems Aren't Ashamed, They Just Don't Like Katie Porter

If there's one thing we've learned this month it's that Democrats can't be shamed into withdrawing from a race anymore. If they could then Jay Jones would have dropped his bid for Virginia AG already. What's more, if shame was an option, Abigain Spanberger would have pulled her endorsement of Jones. Instead, at a recent debate with Winsome Earle-Sears, Spanberger just stared into space and refused to even glance at her opponent when being challenged on her endorsement. She then offered a word salad about Virginians making up their own minds.

In other words, if the Democratic base will vote for him, why should I discourage them?

Things seem to be shaping up much the same in California where we were all reminded last week that Katie Porter, who has been leading the governor's race in the state, is a horrible person who can't deal with follow up questions and likes to shout at her employees.

The idea that Porter seems to be a terrible boss is nothing new; two years ago, she faced similar allegations during a U.S. Senate campaign in which people identifying themselves as former congressional staffers accused her of being “abusive and racist.” (Porter’s communications director at the time denied this, saying, “She has never been racist or abusive to staff.”)

So to deflect the video releases this week, Porter simply had to warm up the Xerox machine and fire off some old statements arguing she holds her staff “to a high standard.”...

In the wake of such a disastrous week, some on social media have wondered aloud whether Porter would be forced to exit the race. But given the modern shamelessness of candidates, that question can only be answered with a hearty chortle. Of course, she’s not going anywhere.

She's not going anywhere. And yet, Politico notes that there has been a conspicuous silence from fellow Democrats, only a few of whom have rushed to back her up.

In an effort to contain the damage, a handful of labor unions and other allies, including Orange County Rep. David Min, who succeeded Porter in the House, have reaffirmed their support in recent days. But amid a bipartisan crush of criticism, the state’s Democratic delegation has largely gone silent.

Is this a sign of shame operating in the Democratic Party?

No, it's not shame. It's just that some of these Democrats know Katie Porter and don't like her very much either. [emphasis added]

POLITICO approached more than a dozen current and former Democratic lawmakers from California for comment on the videos and their interactions with Porter from her years in the House. The vast majority declined to comment — let alone defend Porter. Even Rep. Derek Tran, a fellow Orange County Democrat and one of two members of California’s Democratic congressional delegation who’ve endorsed Porter for governor, declined to comment.

Others were granted anonymity to speak candidly about a sensitive topic.

“Katie Porter is apparently the smartest person in every single room, and she’s not afraid to make you know it,” said one former House colleague from California.

One of the people she's apparently pissed off is Nancy Pelosi.

That tension with Pelosi surfaced in last year’s Senate primary, when the former speaker backed Adam Schiff in California’s Senate race and rallied labor unions and large donors to his side. Porter, meanwhile, only had the endorsement of one of her more than 40 former Democratic House colleagues and finished third in the primary.

Only one House colleague endorsed her out of 40? That suggests she is about as well loved by fellow elected Dems as she is by her own staff. They all agree she's a monster, but just like Abigail Spanberger, they're happy to let the base vote for her if the base decides a monster is what they want.

Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
