And Now for the Biggest News of the Day

I'm not what you'd call a Swiftie by any stretch, certainly not like James Comey. My knowledge of her songs is limited to probably half-a-dozen, mostly from her earlier albums, but the ones I know I like. You Belong With Me is a great pop song.

I'm also not a big football fan so Travis Kelce didn't register with me when I started hearing his name. But there's really no denying that their engagement today is about as big of a pop culture moment as you can get these days.

It was big enough news that it was a top story on most news sites and it was trending on X for a while. Lots of her fans are very happy for her.

Again, I'm not really in this category but my oldest daughter has been a fan since she was about 7 years old. She told me it felt a lot like a friend had gotten engaged. People who grew up with her feel like they know her through the music.

Some of the memes are pretty funny.

Someone even asked President Trump for his reaction during a cabinet meeting and Trump was surprisingly generous.

Guy Benson said that was 10 out of 10 response from the president.

But even if you're not the biggest Taylor Swift fan, I think there's something positive in all of this. She seemingly dated every scrawny, gender indifferent creative artist type in Hollywood and beyond. She drifted from one to another and wound up pretty lonely and unhappy best I can tell. And then she finds a relatively normie football player who makes her actually happy and she's engaged just like that.

There's a message there about traditional American manhood that probably goes beyond politics. And don't think that message isn't being heard by a lot of young women who count themselves as Swift's true fans. Girls, if you want to be happy look for an upbeat, confident jock instead of a nerdy, nihilist Tim Burton-type. It really is possible that a lot of young women are going to get the unspoken message. As Andrew Breitbart used to say, politics is downstream of culture.

I'm still not a fan of her politics, obviously, but given the amount of influence she has, her real life story might be doing the country some genuine good. So for that reason, I second the President's comments and wish her and Travis the best of luck.

And this really is a great pop song. Seems like she kind of predicted how this would all turn out when she made this video 16 years ago.
