Gun control march bumped from National Mall by existing 'talent show' permit

As we learned yesterday, the Florida high school students who have been the face of a push for gun control aren’t really the ones organizing things behind the scenes. A host of progressive gun control groups are actually taking care of most of the planning and preparation for their next big event. The so-called March for Our Lives is scheduled to take place in Washington, DC on March 24th. Unfortunately, the National Mall was already booked that day for what is being described as a “talent show.” From the Washington Post:

A planned rally against mass shootings can’t be held on the Mall later this month because it conflicts with what’s described in a National Park Service permit application as a “talent show.”

A permit application filed last week by survivors of the Parkland, Fla., school massacre indicated the “March For Our Lives” rally will be on March 24, with up to 500,000 attendees expected. Mike Litterst, a spokesman for the Park Service, said organizers proposed holding the event on the Mall but were looking to move the rally to another location after the request conflicted with a film crew’s permit…

The “March For Our Lives” rally, funded in part by Oprah Winfrey and other celebrities, will include “student speakers, musical performers, guest speakers and video tributes,” according to the permit application, with 14 Jumbotrons, 2,000 chairs and 2,000 portable restrooms. The film crew’s plans for the Mall were more modest, listing equipment such as two tables, two bikes and jump ropes.

Litterst said Wednesday that March For Our Lives organizers were planning their rally away from federal land, on Pennsylvania Avenue between Third and 12th streets NW, which is the jurisdiction of the District.

The organizers have applied for that alternative permit on Pennsylvania Avenue but it sounds as if it hasn’t been approved just yet. The organizers (again, a collection of gun control groups) didn’t respond to the Post’s questions about the conflict. As mentioned above, celebrities have been putting big money behind making this planned march a big success:

Covering the costs of bringing people to the march is one way to bump up the numbers and make the march a big success. But it appears the students weren’t aware that the Washington Mall might not be available when they announced their plans last week.

I half-expect the student film project to get the message (via the media) that they are the ones holding up the gun control march and agree to reschedule their event. It’s hard to imagine that this cultural and financial juggernaut (the gun control rally) could actually be bumped over someone’s better-planned film project. I guess we’ll find out soon enough. But as of now, it appears the Parkland students and their Hollywood financial backers have no place to put their 14 jumbotrons.
