In case you hadn’t noticed, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been gaining steam in the polls for the Democratic Primary. It would be easy to miss that bit of news because the majority of the mainstream media has done its level best to ignore him since he tossed his hat in the ring. That strategy didn’t pay off, however, and RFK is now polling consistently in the high teens or even the low twenties, which is really quite an accomplishment for someone running against a sitting incumbent president. This is obviously an unacceptable situation for the legacy media who remain all-in on reelecting Joe Biden. So now, as the New York Post points out, a coordinated campaign to discredit RFK has kicked into gear and the media is trying to cancel him “before a single vote is cast.”
When Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced his primary challenge to Joe Biden in April, the media shrugged him off as a meme candidate who would soon collide with political reality. Two months later, Kennedy is polling as high as 20% and his campaign is gaining momentum. And the media — unwilling to let Biden be primaried by this pedigreed populist — have decided it’s time to step in.
And step in they have. Over the past weeks, major print and broadcast organizations have laid the foundations for a powerful narrative designed to hobble Kennedy’s campaign before a single vote is cast. The strategy is to disqualify Kennedy by labeling him a font of misinformation, out to serve America’s monied technocrats. In other words: a Republican in Kennedy clothes.
After Kennedy officially launched his campaign with a rather glitchy debut on Twitter with Elon Musk, the New York Times wasted no time trying to rip him to shreds. RFK was accused of peddling COVID misinformation and harboring some sort of secret “right-wing” sentiments. On the very same day, the Washington Post chimed in with an equally acerbic hit piece, accusing Kennedy of being a crazed conspiracy theorist. It’s almost as if they coordinated their efforts.
He’s been called “a crackpot” by multiple outlets. More than anything else, despite the “D” after his name, the political press largely wants you to believe that he’s secretly a Mega MAGA Republican. But if you spend any amount of time listening to him, that’s a nonsensical idea.
I’ve listened to a number of interviews with Kennedy, including a really great one that he did with Russel Brand. It’s true that he holds a couple of positions that don’t sit well with the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. He believes that the southern border needs to be secured and he’s been critical of the intelligence community, particularly the CIA. (I think that one is more of a bipartisan position these days.) He also opposes transgender participation in female sports. The press is more than happy to point all of these “nutty” things out.
But beyond that, he’s still a Kennedy. He’s an environmental activist, wants higher taxes on the wealthy, supports expanding the welfare state, and all the rest of the usual things you’d expect. Personally, I wouldn’t vote for him unless he and Biden were the only two people in the race. But he clearly has earned himself a following. He’s raised an impressive amount of campaign money and is clearly conveying his positions on all of the major issues. He deserves a voice in the debate among his own party and Joe Biden should be ashamed of refusing to debate him.
And yet most of the political press is either ignoring him or trying to drive him out of the primary race long before it’s officially begun. They simply can’t afford to risk having Biden go into a complete meltdown on the debate stage, letting the rest of the country know just how badly he’s deteriorated. And so the MSM is trying to shut RFK out of the conversation.
