As the Republicans suffered a nationwide midterm defeat on Tuesday, Florida voters proved that Florida conservatism is American conservatism. All other strands of the movement failed to hold the line. Despite the enormity of the challenges before us, brave and undeterred Floridians turned out in force and stopped the blue wave like a mighty seawall against a tsunami of blue.
The margins may have been smaller this time, but the results are undeniable. Very early in the evening, it became clear that all statewide offices in Florida will remain solidly in Republican hands, while the party balance of our state’s congressional delegation will stay the same. GOP majorities are secure in both houses of the state legislature and, by a referendum that passed with a supermajority, our property taxes will go down.
The Florida model proved once again that voters wanted practical ideas translated into tangible results.
This is Gov. Ron DeSantis’s legacy, as he migrates from two highly popular terms in office to term-limited limbo and whatever may follow. It is what the legacy conservative organizations are unwilling to do or incapable of doing, usually for trite and short-sighted reasons that involve little more than self-regard, the delusion of prestige, and the safe but dull familiarity of their blue state social lives.
