Stories of migrant murderers have become common in America. Consider Tsegaab Binessu, a 30-year-old Ethiopian migrant accused of murdering three people in the offices of a St. Paul, Minnesota apartment complex. He wanted to get out of his $65-a-month parking contract, and when he couldn’t cancel it, he allegedly went on a shooting rampage.
It’s not just the violence that’s a familiar story, however, but also the way Binessu tried to justify it. He told police his murderous frame of mind was the result of a “prolonged immigration process” that had left him unable to bring his wife and children to the United States, an ordeal that led to the end of his marriage and separation from his children.
Binessu’s life had been stripped of meaning, and he’d decided to sell his car and enlist in the U.S. Navy. But he couldn’t get out of the parking contract, so, according to local authorities, he shot and killed three people, execution-style.
Naturally, Binessu was also a victim of racism. “Binessu believes he was treated unfairly because he is Black and an immigrant,” police documents noted.
