WCVB 5, Boston: Lindsay Clancy's attorney, Kevin Reddington, had scathing words for the prosecution and one of the jurors outside of Plymouth Superior Court on Friday after a mistrial was declared.
Reddington said the jury, which had deliberated for seven days, was stuck at 11-1, with one juror holding out to convict.
"I hope that guy can sleep well at night," he said. "[The other jurors] were robbed by one man for whatever his agenda was, who stole seven weeks of the life of these other jurors that were so attentive, so beautiful, so wonderful and listened to this evidence, and you can see how defeated they were sitting there." ...
"[Plymouth County District Attorney Tim] Cruz knows that he was crushed, he doesn't have a case, he doesn't have to stand here and say that he's advocating on behalf of the victims and then look down to see what their names are," Reddington said. "I'm representing a woman who is a fantastic, wonderful individual. This woman is so brave... every day she came in this courthouse, stood tall... sat there through seven weeks of a trial where nobody had anything bad to say about her except the two prosecutors and apparently Tim Cruz."
Ed: I bet he sleeps better at night than Reddington's client. And if this holdout juror refused to buckle to the majority on the belief that the state met the burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt for murder, then he did the right thing. Maybe we should ask the other jurors how they will sleep at night after having been on the cusp of letting a "fantastic, wonderful" triple murderer off the hook. Either way, Reddington's public attack on a juror should result in sanctions.

Mr. Reddington knows better and understands the dangers of reckless and inflammatory rhetoric aimed at a juror doing his civic duty, as well as the prosecution team — he called the district attorney out by name — and still chose to deploy incendiary rhetoric.
Reckless and dangerous.
Ed: Not to mention destructive to the idea of independent juries. Reddington's attempt to have a juror investigated for misconduct simply for applying his judgment to the question of "reasonable doubt" would eliminate the jury system altogether. The state supreme judicial court likely recognized that in telling Reddington to pound sand and take his medicine with the mistrial.

John Hinderaker at Power Line: The holdout juror was, it seems to me, a voice for civilization in a world that seems willing to dispense with the most fundamental norms. Kudos to him.
What I really want to comment on is the behavior of Clancy’s lawyer, Kevin Reddington, and the apparent spinelessness of the trial judge, William Sullivan. Reddington repeatedly attacked the holdout juror in open court and on television, both as the jury was deliberating and after the court had declared a mistrial. While deliberations were still going on, Reddington accused the juror of “lying to the court” and refusing to follow the court’s instructions.
I have never seen anything like this. I tried many jury cases, and I can’t imagine how a trial judge before whom I appeared would have come down on me if I had publicly attacked a particular juror, or group of jurors, as the trial was in progress. It is unheard of. And Judge Sullivan let Reddington get away with it, while, at Reddington’s insistence, holding hearings in open court, in front of television cameras, that should have been conducted privately in chambers. Given this behavior, it is hard to see how the court will be able to find jurors willing to serve in a potential retrial.
Ed: That's a feature, not a bug, in Reddington's media strategy. He has put the next jury pool on notice that any attempt to convict his client will result in the threat of mob action. That's why judges don't usually allow this to happen, and why the Massachusetts state bar should impose sanctions on Reddington, pour encourager les autres.

Politico: Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway on Friday night asked the U.S. Supreme Court for an emergency stay of a Missouri high court ruling that found the state cannot use new, heavily gerrymandered districts in the November election.
“A federal-election-administration disaster is unfolding in Missouri,” Hanaway wrote in a filing for Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who handles appeals for cases filed in the Show-Me State. ...
The court ruled that the November elections must proceed in accordance with the map Missouri used in 2022, which still saw Republicans favored in six of the state’s eight districts.
But Missourians already voted in primary elections last month under the new district lines. Hanaway said state leadership was “genuinely unsure whether it can switch its governing congressional map in time to run a timely federal election.”
Ed: This is an idiotic ruling from the state supreme court. That does not necessarily mean that the US Supreme Court will intervene to reverse or stay this ruling. Whatever SCOTUS does, though, it will need to do soon. If Missouri has to hold new primaries in September, everyone needs some time to organize them, if it's even possible.

NY Post: A Muslim man shot and killed a pro-Palestinian photographer and his friend as they were leaving an Arizona gay bar before turning the gun on himself in what cops say was a hate crime.
Ousman Ceesay unleashed the violence in Tucson around 12:30 a.m. Monday — targeting two men he did not know, Tucson Police confirmed.
Cameron Davis Capara, 33, and Vincent Anthony Siqueiros, 42, were in the parking lot of Venture-N when they were confronted and then shot by Ceesay, according to cops. ...
The gunman was carrying a note with a list of other gay-friendly businesses in the area, but cops said he never tried to enter the bar near where he committed the heinous crime.
A second note in his home found by detectives “indicated he acted alone and that this shooting was a targeted attack motivated by hate toward the LGBTQIA+ community,” the department said.

Free Beacon: Columbia University's prestigious Knight First Amendment Institute is slated to hold a symposium next week on the eve of 9/11 that will prominently feature "an interview with Mohsen Mahdawi," the Palestinian Columbia protest leader who was recently exposed for a history of supporting "terrorist organizations" and allegedly claiming during a job interview at a gun shop that "I like to kill Jews."
Mahdawi's participation in the event—which will examine how the United States "Forever War" or "War on Terror" has stifled free speech—will test whether Columbia's support for the First Amendment trumps concerns that it is offering a sympathetic and sanitized forum for a man facing a deportation order and who once promised to "annihilate the Jews." Columbia University is under scrutiny after entering a $220 million settlement last year with the federal government over allegations it fostered a campus environment dangerous to Jews. ...
Mahdawi, who is currently fighting a deportation order over his support for "pro-terrorist riots" at Columbia, is well positioned to discuss the issue. He served as a central force in Columbia's pro-Hamas protest movement that advocated violence against Jews and turned the campus into a hotbed of antisemitic fervor. A scathing investigation released Wednesday by two investigative journalists further revealed that Mahdawi made frequent statements that lent "support for terrorists, terrorist organisations, armed violence and those who carried it out."
Mahdawi will be interviewed on Thursday, Sept. 10—a day before the anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks—by Columbia Daily Spectator reporter Daksha Pillai, according to an online schedule. The result is that many men are starting to see women in general as threats to civilization. The "repeal the 19th Amendment" jokes are starting to no longer be jokes.
I do not believe any man or group of men can fix this.
The only solution, I believe, is for older (like over 40) women of power and influence to vocally and actively combat this phenomenon at every level and to hold these younger women to account for their aberrant behaviors, at every level: in the workplace, in the schoolhouse, in the government, in the media and at the national level.
This trend is an ominous one and it needs to be reversed before it is too late.
