Welcome to our VIP feature for Hot Air as well as a members-only show in the Hughniverse! Duane Patterson and I now are doing a Week in Review show for Friday evenings, exclusive to members in both platforms. Duane has been the Generalissimo behind the Hugh Hewitt Show for more than two decades, and we have partnered on weekly commentary since 2007.
What stories topped your priority lists this week? What Axios dismissed as a rebooted Red Scare is in fact a serious attempt by radical revolutionary Marxists to seize control of the Democrat Party – and through it, the country as a whole. The Protection Racket Media has and will continue to spin it as Republicans pouncing, seizing, or any new synonym reporters may use to avoid the obvious and threadbare trope. However, as Duane and I discuss, the communists are definitely on the march, and extolling tyrants such as Stalin, Fidel, the Kims in North Korea, and Mao as their guiding lights. As I warn: Tell me their heroes, and I will tell you their end goals.
What are Republicans to do? Both Duane and I agree that this crisis represents a real opportunity to recast the midterms as a defense of liberty over socialist despotism. We also agree that the new DSA vanguard has a unifying threat of anti-Semitism, and that Republicans need to highlight both. The GOP has to also have a positive policy message, but the 2026 cycle just became the Break Glass In Case of Emergency Midterm.
After a brief mention of the status quo in the Strait of Hormuz – and a quick look at oil prices this morning – we move on to discuss the Supreme Court decisions handed down over the past week. Did the Right overreact to the birthright citizenship case? Duane and I agree on that much, even if we disagree (slightly on form) about the decision. Both of us believe that observers really missed a big decision in NRSC v FEC, and also underestimate the unique nature of Trump's victory in Slaughter.
Be sure to watch it all, and extend the conversation in the comments!
