Harris to Colbert: Trump Broke Me

Why did Kamala Harris take a pass on running for governor in California? It's not because she's aiming at another presidential run in 2028, Harris told Stephen Colbert. It's because she finally lost an election.

No, seriously. "I don't want to back into the system," she explains, "because the system is broken." And if you think that's absurd, Colbert manages to top it:

Ahem. If anyone has reason for gratitude toward "the system," it's Harris. She is and has always been an intellectual lightweight who counted on "the system" to keep her in office. It was the Democrat establishment that ensured she kept winning elections in California despite her demonstrable lack of talent for campaigning or even for normal conversation. It was "the system," among Democrats, that carried her to the US Senate, where she could have spent several successful decades safely ensconced in the system's Club of Clubs, cosseted forever by California Democrats as the incumbent.

Instead, Harris got bored with the lifetime sinecure less than halfway through her first term, choosing to run for president in 2019. She then jumped at the chance to play second banana to the man she accused of being racist in the primary when her bid flopped, in a process where "the system" ensured nearly no other competition except Karen Bass and maybe Val Demings. (Biden pledged to pick a black woman as his running mate, you will recall.)  Harris proved herself so inept at the VP role that the White House sidelined her within the first five months of the Biden Regency. Right up until Joe Biden's disastrous debate in June 2024, one of the big questions circling the campaign was whether Biden would replace her with a more effective running mate.

And then, when Biden's senility got exposed on national television, "the system" closed ranks to ensure Harris got the nomination. Democrats refused to allow anyone to compete for that slot, anointing Harris in one of the dumbest political moves of all time. As I wrote to a liberal friend of mine at the time, the Democrat "system" chose the worst candidate in the worst possible way.

"The system" handed Harris her entire career. It takes either a massive amount of chutzpah or sheer and terminal cluelessness to complain about "the system" at this stage of Harris' career.

Of course, Colbert ate this nonsense up. He calls it "harrowing" that Harris thinks our system is broken, because ... um ... er ... CBS won't renew his contract?

Speaking to Harris, Colbert said: 'As someone who is very qualified for the presidency, a senator, an attorney general, a vice president of the United States and then a very hopeful and dynamic presidential candidate for the 107 days that you had to run,  to hear you say that it's broken, to hear you say that our systems aren't strong enough, is harrowing.

'There is almost no curse word bad enough,' Colbert said, before Harris interjected to remind him: 'It doesn't mean we give up.'

Say what? Harris just got done explaining why she was giving up!

The system isn't broken, and Harris isn't a victim. This is just another pernicious form of election denialism, practically the same version that Democrats accuse Trump of employing regarding the 2020 election. The system worked just fine; it held Harris accountable for the failures of the incumbent administration as well as the excesses of the lawfare and insane demonization employed by Democrats against Donald Trump. That's how elections work, at least elections that Democrats can't fix -- like the 2024 primaries that protected an addled Joe Biden, or the California elections that produced a differently addled AG and Senator Kamala Harris.

That's not to say this clip doesn't feature the broken, however. Both Harris and Colbert are broken. Donald Trump broke them both. And they resent the hell out of it.
