It must be nice to be a wealthy member of the hyper-elite class.
I will never know, myself. While not quite a member of the lumpenproletariat, I don't move in the same circles as Nicholas Kristof, a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner and columnist for The New York Times for decades. I didn't go to Harvard or Oxford, as he did, and it never occurred to me that I could take time off from my tony job to run for governor of a state.
I haven't traveled the world or palled around with the Clintons or been classmates with Jeffrey Toobin, of public onanism fame, and Desmond Tutu never made me an honorary African.
And I don't drink much Pinot Noir.
Kristof is angry that President Trump wants to protect federal agents and ordinary citizens from the ravages of Antifa attacks, and his line of attacks is well-designed to appeal to people of his class and station in life. Portland, you see, is really nice if you have money and stay away from the riff-raff.
This is what happens when journalists become part of the wealthy elite: They pretend they're fighting or mocking Trump when they are actually mocking the human misery that their terrible policies and vanity morals inflict on the poor and working class. https://t.co/31ZGrgsqVn

Indeed, the same can be said of any third-world city, at least when a civil war is not ongoing at the moment. Even in the most impoverished third-world cities, there are well-policed areas where the wealthy elite can enjoy their money and power. For that matter, even cities like Sana'a in Yemen have safer areas, although Pinot Noir is not on the public menus there.

President Trump has dispatched federal troops to what he calls "war-ravaged Portland." Portland has its problems but it is not the "hell" Trump claims; it remains a food-and-wine heaven. "Hell" does not serve Pinot Noir this good. I suspect Trump is sending troops mainly to see if he can provoke violence to distract from his messes (Epstein files, corruption, tariffs, economic softening) and justify his authoritarian rule.
The fact that the Portland Historical Society is holding events seems, to Kristof, to be proof that life is hunky-dorey in his city, despite the fact that, objectively speaking, the commercial real estate market is collapsing, and overdoses are as common an occurrence as homeless people pooping in public.
This is just mind blowing

This is a public park in Portland, Oregon. Traffic drives by, people are parking on the street next to it, large apartment complexes line the park and just look at it….@kevinvdahlgren walks through “A beautiful Portland Park” run by Democrats pic.twitter.com/cK3epbh1uz
And then there are the nightly attacks on an ICE facility by Antifa, which the Portland Police not only allow but encourage. They have abandoned the city block around the federal facility--abandoning parts of Portland to mobs is standard practice in Portland, so they can concentrate on the truly important task of protecting the Historical Society for Nick Kristof and his pals. It's a similar strategy to the ones that third-world governments use to corral gang members away from their treasured pleasure areas.
UNBELIEVABLE FOOTAGE! I witnessed Portland PD giving advice to ANTIFA terrorists on how to avoid federal troops being allowed into the city after the temporary restraining order (TRO) against President @realDonaldTrump was upheld by the activist judge. He did this even after… pic.twitter.com/8jY45kHIo6

Want proof that the Portland Police are allowing ANTIFA to take over the city streets?

Yesterday, around 1pm, rioters arrived at the ICE Facility and blocked off the roadway. Multiple PPB Officers watched it happen, then packed their bags and left ANTIFA to control the street. pic.twitter.com/ByQ8Y9nLk3
Kristof isn't making his pitch about the Portland Paradise to ordinary people--ordinary people don't read The New York Times or care about Pulitzer Prizes--but to the fellow members of his class. "The Pinot is great!" is a version of Conan O'Brien's "Haiti is great already." Since Barbecue has yet to eat him, and there is a resort with armed guards to keep the riffraff out (although it is currently closed due to violence), everything is hunky dorey.
How is it possible that Haiti remains the poorest, most violent, failed nation-state in the Western Hemisphere when Important Celebrities like Bill Maher, Susan Sarandon, and Conan O'Brien tell us otherwise (with @USAID-funded t-shirts)? pic.twitter.com/soatSEbOCK

Marie Antoinette famously (and apocryphally, I am afraid) said, "Let them eat cake," which encapsulated the attitude of the upper crust of the French Ancien Régime.
In Portland, if Antifa attacks you, Portland Police won’t help. You can either get beaten to a pulp, die—or risk arrest and prosecution if you defend yourself. I learned this the hard way and nearly paid for it with my life. Watch my interview: https://t.co/OaKjY6xqs4 pic.twitter.com/jRr6DGBp6E

Kristof has updated that to "Let them drink Pinot." A perfect encapsulation of the current elite.
