Amy Klobuchar Beclowns Herself on SNAP Cuts

Pro Tip, Senator Klobuchar: if you want to give people the impression that Donald Trump and the Republicans are looking to starve women and children out of spite, it's better not to put that message out there by dragging out a morbidly obese public employee as the face of your cause.

Today, we heard from Felecia, a single mom of four who works up to three jobs at a time to make ends meet. She counts on SNAP to help put food on the table.

This is who Republicans in Congress are trying to take food away from.

Listen to her story.

There is so much wrong with this. Of all the people you could put out there to be the sympathetic icon of your cause, this poor woman is about the worst choice you could make. I don't know this woman or her circumstances--perhaps she really does need SNAP benefits because of some personal circumstances--but dragging out a woman who has been using SNAP for over 20 years, who doesn't actually work three jobs despite Klobuchar's claim, and who seems like an advertisement for excluding candy, snacks, junk food, and soda from SNAP purchases opens her, and Klobuchar, up to ridicule.

Given that SNAP cuts are aimed at illegal aliens, setting work requirements, limiting the scope of purchases to healthy foods, and limiting benefit increases to inflation, this woman would not have her benefits cut. In fact, while the FUNDING levels will go down, legitimate recipients will go largely unaffected. That is, unless you spend all that money on junk food.

Democrats and the media always go for the sob stories because they often work. Portray any cuts to funding as cuts to sympathetic women and children, even if the targets of the cuts are freeloaders sitting in their basements playing video games, and you have a political winner.

At least they think so, and with certain people they really do. Nobody knows the details unless they dig into them, because the left owns The Narrative™.

But the optics and the arguments are not favorable for Klobuchar. Apparently, this woman has been on SNAP for over 20 years, which, shall we say, is excessive. People like to believe that when they provide charity, it is a hand up, not a handout.

You didn’t listen to what she said, or you are deliberately misstating what she said.

She is not working 3 jobs at a time, she said she did that 21 years ago when her first child was born.

She is currently working one job for the school district and using SNAP for food.

SNAP is allowing her to feel comfortable working a job that does not pay enough to cover her monthly expenses.  I understand that she values this added free time in her life for her family, but she is expecting that other parents will work more so they can pay more taxes to feed herself and her children.

SNAP should be a temporary helping hand to provide nutrition for a family while a parent gets into a better employment position.  It is not lifelong supplemental income.

Currently, SNAP goes out to nearly all comers, regardless of their life choices. That means illegal aliens, able-bodied men of any age, and the benefits are very often used to buy junk food...obviously. Democrats are fighting like hell to prevent reforming SNAP at all.

It's cruel to make fun of people for their health problems, but when you drag somebody out to be the face of a food program, it isn't smart to drag out a morbidly obese person who has been gorging herself on junk for 20+ years on the taxpayers' dime. It looks more like an advertisement against the wisdom of our current SNAP policies than evidence that the policies are good.

I actually feel a little bad for this woman. Democrats dragged her out, put her in the spotlight, and she is getting ridiculed on social media. It was totally predictable, at least if you have any sense of the public mood and how social media works. Everybody who looks at this woman and listens to her thinks, "Gee, she made some bad life decisions." That is as true for the people who will publicly defend her as the ones who will rip her on social media.

If you want to present a sympathetic face, Amy, do better. You harmed your cause and exposed a woman to public ridicule for no purpose.
