MEME

One of the reasons I am optimistic that the backlash to woke ideology has staying power, and that in turn will harm Democratic Party prospects for years to come, is that leftists are retreating even further into a bubble.

Some Democratic Party hacks understood right away that leftism cost Democrats millions of votes. But they don't control the party.

Widely acknowledged to be one of, or even the most successful ad of the 2024 campaign was Trump's "They/Them" spot.

The ad, while focusing on alphabet ideology, served to highlight how insane woke leftists are. In the aftermath of across-the-board election losses a few Democrats are calling for a reconsideration of the rush to the left.

It's not going to happen anytime soon. Rather than engaging in self-reflection and recalibration, the ideological leadership, many of the donors, and the activists on the ground are fleeing to even less ideologically diverse bubbles.

One of those bubbles is "Bluesky," a leftist version of Twitter, to which all sorts of influencers have fled in a snit. Proudly announcing their flight from Twitter, they are creating an alternative in which they don't have to share the same electrons as Elon Musk, Donald Trump, and anybody who disagrees with them.

How's that going?

Leftists are working to ban everybody and anybody who deviates from the pack. Conservatives can get banned in as little as 30 seconds if they try to post the most anodyne comments.

No swearing, no Nazism--in fact, stating a simple fact accepted by the vast majority of Americans--is so outside the Overton window for leftists that it won't even appear in the timelines of anybody on the app.

No doubt Bluesky will soon become a place where totalitarian personalities feel comfortable and also one where nobody who posts there has any connection at all to the real world. That is the point, obviously, but it also guarantees that the elite and activist classes of Democrats will become even more alienated from ordinary Americans.

That is the opposite of what smart politicos should do, but ideologues are more interested in purity than winning. This is not just a Democrat disease, of course, but it is much harder for Republicans as the party is getting more diverse while Democrats are becoming less so.

This exchange between Jon Favreau and Greg Sargent is emblematic. Favreau, a political hack, wants to heed the results of the election (at least somewhat), while Sargent, as a "journalist," wants purity.

This trend is great for Republicans as long as they don't blow it. As long as Trump (and Vance) remain leaders in the party, that likely won't happen. Trump seems to have one winning formula, Vance another, and I think DeSantis and Youngkin each have proven they can put together winning coalitions based on somewhat different formulae.

Democrats will remain in the wilderness and shed voters as they retreat into ever less diverse bubbles. They may win elections when Republicans hit electoral potholes, but their viability as a political party is threatened by the need for purity.
