Sunday Smiles, Save the Cats Edition

Springfield, Ohio, has become ground zero in the race for President of the United States.

And the debate between Democrats and Republicans on this issue is quite revealing. You see two fundamentally different views of what matters starkly opposed.

Democrats, and especially intellectuals, are obsessed with a couple of issues: is the number of cats being eaten in Springfield zero, and is it racist even to discuss the matter? There is absolutely no interest in the question of whether Springfield residents are happy or not about the Biden/Harris administration dumping 20,000 migrants into their community.

Not even a little bit. Who cares? It's about cats and Haitians, and the American citizens are NPCs in their world.

Republicans and working-class people believe that the residents of Springfield are being put upon by a federal government more concerned with shipping Haitian migrants to small-town America than what the consequences of doing so have been. How many cats are being eaten is almost beside the point.

It's not the cats, it's the people. In particular, American citizens who have seen their town flooded with migrants without education, who can't speak English, who practice a religion that does indeed include animal sacrifice, and who have been driving up the rents and causing chaos in the streets.

Intellectuals have a tendency to get lost in the weeds. Is the number of cat barbecues zero, one, or more? Is that video of cats being barbecued happening within the city limits of Springfield or miles away? Is it OK to speak ill of immigrants, or should we be culturally sensitive?

Ordinary people, on the other hand, see things in starker terms: there is NO FRICKING WAY you can drop 20,000 migrants in a town of 60,000 and expect things to go well. New York City's Mayor started screaming bloody murder after about 50,000 migrants started showing up in his city of over 8 million.

I've seen clips from the Sunday shows where the pundits are outraged about the cat controversy, completely ignoring the fact that the people of Springfield and many other small towns getting flooded by migrants are groaning under the weight. They don't care, because they think the only reason one could object is that you are a racist.

Who cares about the plebs? We have Haitians to pretend to care about! The plebs are racists anyway, and Trump is baiting the racists!

Of course, as with the residents of Martha's Vineyard, none of these pundits would tolerate anything like this sort of invasion in their neighborhoods.

Rents have increased in Springfield by 40% in just the past year due to the huge influx of migrants. Government and nonprofits pay the rent for the migrants, while the citizens of the city have to suck it up and pay for their own housing.

Landlords may love it, just as the Amazon warehouse in the area loves being able to pay lower wages. Lower wages and higher rents are bad for the Springfield natives, but so what?

The pundits are busy fighting over cat barbecues--while J.D. Vance and Donald Trump are focused on the people.

Trump managed to turn the discussion to a vital truth--Washington technocrats are imposing their will on working-class people. If it took cat memes to do it, then thank God for cat memes.

Intellectuals--including me--see precision in language as vital to speaking truth. Trump, being more of a rapper than a journalist, focused on the larger, more essential truth: the migrant invasion is hurting ordinary people. Trump is not an intellectual, but he is good at speaking essential truths. He says things that are "directionally true" instead of lying with statistics.

Every single pundit should take a month to live in a Springfield rental house and then report back their experience. If it is great, then tell us. If not, could you tell us that, too? I'd like to know.

It will never happen. None of these reporters has GONE to Springfield to speak to residents. Only independent journalists have, which tells you everything you need to know: they are spewing a narrative and absolutely indifferent to the reality that Springfield's residents face.

After this Sunday, when all the pundits spent enormous time and effort convincing their viewers that Trump is a lying racist xenophobe, we can rest assured that all the viewers who weren't going to vote for Trump before this controversy will certainly not vote for Trump now.
