Sunday Smiles

San Francisco doesn’t care about American citizens, but sure wants to impress Xi Jinping.

For years the streets of the city have been clogged with trash, drug paraphernalia, and zombies wandering around drugged out of their minds. Tents for homeless folks blocked the sidewalks, and human excrement was a constant hazard when walking around.

Not this week. President Biden is meeting with the Chinese President and suddenly the streets look pretty good.

Not that anybody minds that the streets have been cleared. In fact, if I were a San Francisco resident I would lobby to have summits in the city every month.

But it shouldn’t take a foreign leaders’ visit for the city leaders to do their jobs for once. Keeping the city clean and safe is their job, but one they don’t have much interest in performing for the citizens.

The fact that this task can be accomplished–in nearly record time–demonstrates that it is possible to accomplish the task. What is lacking is not the resources or the legal muscle. It is the will.

The city is run for 2 classes of people, neither of which is the ordinary resident: the “dispossessed” and the Elite who can avoid them (or the bureaucrats who make a living off the suffering of the “dispossessed.”)

If the political class wanted to help the homeless you would think that at least a few of them would be helped. As of last year, the city spends about $57,000 per homeless person. Is there some magic number beyond which the problem will evaporate? Of course not; most of that money goes to bureaucrats and nonprofits, with developers getting a chunk. It’s a good gig for everybody but the homeless person.

I hate that I have become so cynical, but the evidence is clear. San Francisco has become a pit of despair because the politicians like it that way. When they decide to clean things up, they can and do.

This is how societies decline.

Now for the smiles!
