How can one say goodbye to an icon like Dolly Parton? Christian and Ed spend some time discussing what made Dolly into an American Sweetheart for decades. We talk about her genuine nature, the grace and charm that she extended to all, and wonder whether anyone now living has the same reach. We both love Carol Burnett, Dick van Dyke, and Mel Brooks, but we both admit that Dolly Parton seemed to have more purchase on American culture. Does the nature of country music have something to do with it – or did Dolly just have a particular magic?
Country music didn't do much for Jelly Roll last week, we both note. For some reason, ABC and the Kimmels chose the singer to follow Rosie O'Donnell as the guest host for Jimmy Kimmel Live, and the results were less than optimal all the way around. After basically using Kimmel's Trump obsession for his own monologue, Jelly Roll told Trump supporters to stop listening to his music ... and then did an embarrassing backpedal the next night. Christian and Ed wonder what everyone was thinking.
We also wonder whether Jason Statham needs a new formula, and perhaps should talk with Liam Neeson after his latest film fizzled in its opening weekend. Will Sasha Baron Cohen even get an opening weekend for his upcoming film, or will the Left apply the same cancel methods that Cohen himself once encouraged for others? Plus, we discuss the brilliance of Jerry Seinfeld, and Ed talks about the best comedy about filmmaking.
