When it comes to comedy, everything should be on the table.
Or, as Steve Allen reportedly said, "comedy equals tragedy plus time." Still, some general boundaries exist, particularly based on the venue in question.
Comedy roasts? Anything goes. Period. End of sentence.
A first date? Tread very carefully, or you won't get a second.
And, if you're a late-night host, finding the funny in a failed presidential assassination seems like a lousy idea. Cruel. Cold. Ugly.
Unless you're a hack late-night type, and the potential victim was President Donald Trump.
The usual suspects had a grand ol' time mocking President Trump after Secret Service agents advised him to duck and cover after an Iranian plot came to their attention. The President was set to leave Turkey when he opted out of Air Force One and took a separate military plane home.
He had to crouch into a catering truck in the process.
We're already at war with Iran, so the stakes are sky high. Plus, Iran has allegedly attempted to kill President Trump before. The most important piece of context is also the most obvious.
President Trump was shot in the ear at a Butler, PA rally two years ago. It's a miracle he's still alive, but two rally members weren't so fortunate. He's suffered several attempts on his life since then, including a gunman who stormed the White House Correspondents Dinner in April.
Again and again and again. Serious stuff. Scary, too. Or, if you're a liberal late-night host, comedy gold.
Here's far-Left Rosie O'Donnell, filling in for the almost as far-Left host, on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" this week.
This has been kind of a strange experience for me because all of a sudden I'm re-famous ... I'm back in the spotlight, all thanks to President Oompa J. Loompa, who is watching us this evening from inside a catering cart.
It's funny because someone was trying to kill the president. You don't get it? Maybe because you have a soul.
Right?
Heck, Fallon couldn't get enough of the gag. Now, imagine if President Barack Obama's life was threatened. What would the reaction be?
Mull over that while Fallon does his highbrow comedy bit. He came onto the stage in a catering cart Aug. 18.
With everything going on in the world, Trump was, like, ‘[imitating Trump] ‘Just leave me in here, OK? Just leave me in. Let me know when the war is over.'
He wasn't done.
The whole thing seemed incredibly stressful, but, thankfully, Trump was asleep for most of it, so it’s OK.
Remember when Fallon teed off on President Joe Biden's endless examples of his physical and mental decline? No? That's because he ignored it for four excruciating years.
The far-Left Jon Stewart weighed in on the matter, too.
Here’s the question ... Did he have to put on the cater waiter outfit?
The Left has been apoplectic about President Trump over the past decade. that's partly due to Trump's often-crude shtick. And they have a point.
Yet the same Left not only accepts ghoulish attacks like this, they luxuriate in them. Some moral high ground.
