So I woke up this morning in this quaint Bed & Breakfast in Pennsylvania, and the clock radio was playing the exact same song that came on yesterday morning. And the weather was identical. And the lady serving breakfast was serving the same thing, which was odd. And then the President’s budget director appeared on the television and said…
White House warns spending talks are on track for another shutdown ‘crisis’
White House Budget Director Jack Lew on Friday warned that the negotiations on the 2012 omnibus spending bill are going poorly and could soon lead to a “crisis” that shuts down the government.
Appropriators are negotiating a nine-bill, $900 billion omnibus package, but the White House and Republicans are at odds over rider provisions attached to the spending bills, including ones related to abortion and the environment. Funding for the government runs out Dec. 16, leaving little time to resolve the disputes.
Lew said President Obama is prepared to veto an omnibus with ideological riders in it.
It’s moments like this which are precisely why I invented the #headdesk hashtag on Twitter.
I wonder what it could involve? Could it be Democrats wanting to lay out a program of “unavoidable” spending and tax increases? Might it entail Republicans insisting on lower taxes and reducing the debt? Could there – just possibly – be finger pointing and blame shifting? Will there be 11th hour demands, drama and midnight votes which eventually wind up with them doing what they always do?
Naw. Couldn’t be. I’ve probably just taken my cynical pills twice in one day again. It’s terrible getting old.
