A coalition of 9/11 family members, first responders and elected officials on Tuesday urged New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani not to attend Friday's memorial marking the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
In a press briefing on the steps of City Hall, survivors of those who lost family members and loved ones in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks spoke one after one calling on the new mayor to skip the commemorations. Some cited Mamdani's previous rhetoric, and most said they didn't want the solemn ceremony to become a media circus.
Mamdani, New York City's first Muslim mayor, has been criticized by Jewish groups over his alignment with pro-Palestinian groups, criticism of the Israeli government, and his use of the phrase "globalize the intifada," which has been linked to acts of violence against Jewish people and acts of terrorism.
Nineteen terrorist hijackers belonging to the militant group al-Qaida carried out the flights.
