My Dinner with Dick

So with Dick Cheney’s death fading from the news, I’m going to tell a small Dick Cheney story of my own. It’s not of any sort of cosmic significance, but it captures something that the press coverage generally didn’t.

In 2005 I was invited to a dinner at at the Vice President’s residence at the Naval Observatory. I was asked not to blog about it, and I didn’t. Also present were the Powerline guys and their wives (John Hinderaker said I could mention them) and a talk radio host and his wife whose name I will omit. After 20 years, and the death of the principal, I feel like I can mention it, but the dinner isn’t really the point.

It was a nice dinner, very sociable, Dick Cheney sat at one end of the table, Lynne Cheney at the other. The food, wine, and conversation flowed, and were quite good. I remember Cheney (Dick) telling a story of listening to Don Imus on the radio and laughing along as Imus mad fun of some guy named “Pork Chop” before realizing that “Pork Chop” was . . . him. Washington in a nutshell.
