Decision time: GOP field will take shape in next two weeks

The Indiana legislative session is scheduled to end a week next Friday, April 29th, and Gov. Mitch Daniels has said repeatedly that he’ll make an announcement soon after that. Daniels is set to deliver a major education speech the following week, on May 4th, at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C. – an event that, depending on his time line, could amount to his national debut as a candidate or offer evidence as to whether he will run. The latest line on Daniels: His public comments recently have suggested he’s unlikely to run and his family is said to be unenthused about the idea. But some of the party’s top donors are holding out to see what he does.

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour says he’ll decide whether he’s in or out by the end of April – meaning a decision is likely to come sometime next week. Barbour has been taking all the steps of a candidate running – hiring staff, visiting early states, contacting donors – but is also weighing the personal cost that comes with a run. “Before I make a final decision, I’m going to make sure that I feel the call strongly enough, got enough fire in the belly that I’m ready to make a 10-year commitment, which is what this – it’s a 10-year commitment,” he told reporters earlier this month in South Carolina.
