Looks like Tom Homan wasn't kidding around. Last month, he confirmed that the Department of Homeland Security had opened a probe into Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and the, er, curious circumstances surrounding her brother's admission to the US. Accusations that Omar committed fraud by marrying her brother have percolated for years and have been well documented by our friends at Power Line.
Now we know that the Department of Justice has joined the investigation. DHS investigators raided Omar's Washington, D.C. residence this morning pursuant to a Department of Justice warrant, ABC News reported earlier today:
Rep. Ilhan Omar's Washington, D.C.-area residence was searched early Monday morning, a Department of Justice spokesperson said, as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.
Sources tell ABC News that the investigation relates to Omar’s immigration paperwork.
"Today in the Washington, D.C. area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice," a DOJ spokesperson said. "This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation."
Fox News also reported on the raid, but its source claims it relates to Omar's own entry paperwork:
Multiple federal agents with HSI jackets were seen outside Omar's Washington, D.C. home in the early hours of Monday.
Two sources close to the investigation say the search stems from a criminal fraud investigation into the Somali-born congresswoman's immigration paperwork, which was filled out by her late father when she was a child.
The raid started around 6 a.m. with HSI and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) leading the operation. The Department of Justice (DOJ) is also involved in the investigation.
"Today in the Washington, D.C., area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation," a DOJ spokesperson told Fox News Digital.
Hmmmmm. Did Omar and her father lie about her own status? The issue with Omar's brother should have been politically disqualifying – and would have been in any other place than MN-05 – but it also would be beyond the statute of limitations for prosecution. The marriage took place in 2009, and it continued for several years even while Omar filed joint tax returns with another man, Ahmed Hirsi, with whom she apparently lived while married to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi – her brother.
Scott Johnson laid all of this out in a Washington Free Beacon report last December:
What I said in 2016 remains true today. In 2019, however, the state campaign finance board released its investigative file on Omar’s 2016 campaign finance violations. The file was full of interesting documents bearing on the 2016 campaign controversy. Among them were Omar’s 2014 and 2015 tax returns filed jointly with Ahmed Hirsi, whom she had never legally married, while she was still legally married to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi.
Omar and Elmi’s 2009 marriage license, by the way, had been signed by Christian pastor Wilecia Harris. That remains an unmentionable detail in the sequence of events constructed by Omar, in which every twist and turn is accounted for by her Islamic "faith tradition."
In 2019, I told Coolican about the campaign finance board documents by email. He and Stephen Montemayor proceeded to write a 3,000 word page-one story—the most-read Star Tribune story of 2019—revisiting the issue with the documents in the file and other social media material we had reported on Power Line.
Their story proves beyond a reasonable doubt that Omar married her brother for some fraudulent purpose. Coolican and Montemayor all but begged Omar for an interview and access to her family to discuss the issue. She repaid them with the same kind of treatment I had received in 2016. These left-wing reporters for a left-wing newspaper begged Omar for a response, but they got the same one I had in 2016. They were bigots, too.
It would be impossible to prosecute Omar for what happened in 2009. However, if Omar and her father misrepresented her status at her immigration, that could be pursued as a reason to revoke her status and strip her of her naturalized citizenship. That would disqualify Omar from Congress and might have her on the first flight to Mogadishu, assuming that the DoJ and DHS can prove fraud. Given that Omar has publicly declared that Somalia is her priority as a member of Congress, that may not even be a punishment.
Stay tuned, in other words, because other possibilities exist here, too. For instance: What kinds of contacts did Omar and her family maintain in Somalia? The involvement of the DoJ in securing the warrant may be pro forma, or it may be that the issues go beyond immigration.
Editor’s Note: Democrat politicians and their radical supporters will do everything they can to interfere with and threaten ICE agents enforcing our immigration laws.
