Let’s see if we can unpack all the ironies in this story, coming to us from Jammie Wearing Fool:
President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign is considering moving the final day of the Democratic National Convention to Bank of America Stadium to sell more skyboxes to wealthy donors, three Democrats involved in the fundraising told Bloomberg News.
We’ll start with this. The President who inspired the Occupy movement with his class warfare rhetoric in September now wants to make his convention speech at a stadium named after one of the banks that got bailout money. Why? So that he can charge more money for the 1% to attend his speech.
And why might that be? Here’s a little more irony:
The 74,000-seat home of the Carolina Panthers also would have room for the convention to sell more floor passes close to the stage. Planners are struggling to meet a $36.6 million fundraising goal, according to the Democrats, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss the matter.
What a shock. The party that has been cheerleading the Occupiers find themselves short on funds for their big summer bash, thanks to a lack of support from those big donors. So, is this just an error based on a little desperation? Nope:
Obama advisers are aware of the political downside of the president delivering his nationally televised acceptance in a stadium named for a bank that considered imposing a fee that he said would have “mistreated” customers, sources told Bloomberg. That would be outweighed, they said, by the chance to lure more big-dollar contributors to cover the convention’s costs.
Yup, the very bank that Democrats demonized for adding a user fee to debit cards might now get a lot of free advertising from the leaders of their party during the Democratic National Convention, because Democrats find themselves short on cash … just like the banks did when Democrat Dick Durbin inserted a law that limited their ability to recover costs from merchants. Maybe instead of the Barackopolis, the Democrats can build a big ATM machine lectern for Obama’s speech.
