Democrats Freaking Out Because Trump Says He Will Jail Election Cheaters

Hmmm.

This is strange. For people who claim to defend democracy, it is striking that so many liberals and Democrats are freaking out that Donald Trump is warning people intending to commit election fraud that they are liable to go to jail.

Alex Thompson, national political correspondent for Axios and CNN commentator, was among the people who found Trump's threats a danger to democracy and warns that we should take Trump seriously!

Well I hope so. Unlike the Democrats and MSM folks who are freaking out, I happen to think that jailing people who are trying to destroy our country by cheating during an election should go to jail. Why don't they?

President Trump is now proposing two of the largest-ever federal arrests of people living in America, including U.S. citizens, if he's re-elected:

  1. Trump, on his Truth Social platform last night, threatened to jail adversaries, including Democratic donors. "WHEN I WIN, those people that CHEATED" in elections of 2020 or 2024, he wrote, "will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the Law, which will include long term prison sentences ... Please beware that this legal exposure extends to Lawyers, Political Operatives, Donors, Illegal Voters, & Corrupt Election Officials."
  2. Trump, asked by TIME magazine in April about his plans for the largest deportation of undocumented immigrants in American history, said he has "no choice": "I don't believe this is sustainable for a country, what's happening to us, with probably 15 million and maybe as many as 20 million by the time Biden's out. Twenty million people, many of them from jails, many of them from prisons, many of them from mental institutions."

Why it matters: Trump is saying, with specificity, how he would increase the use of federal power if he returns to the White House. No need to rely on what advisers and allies say — he says it himself.

Context: Trump's public appearances have grown more erratic and incendiary, at a time when many top Republicans want him to focus more on substantive arguments against Harris.

  • Trump's debate with Vice President Harris is coming up Tuesday night, and his new threat is a likely topic.

Reality check: Trump's claims of widespread fraud in 2020 have been debunked. Trump acknowledged in a Lex Fridman podcast interview posted this past week that he "lost by a whisker."

  • Trump's statements about the border have been found to be exaggerated or outdated. His statements don't account for Biden administration arrests and asylum restrictions. An April report by the Department of Homeland Security estimated that 11 million unauthorized immigrants were in the U.S. in 2022.

Thompson is horrified that Trump wants to jail election cheaters, making the false claim that election fraud allegations were "debunked" for 2020. That is simply not true. Almost all challenges were never adjudicated, with judges denying that people challenging the vote counts didn't have standing. In Georgia, Trump's opponents are hiding the ball, want to destroy the evidence before it is examined, and have had to admit many errors.

We don't know if there was cheating, but we sure haven't had an accounting.

As for cheating in 2024--if it exists and Trump sics the FBI on the cheaters, I would assume that all right-thinking people would applaud. Only people in favor of cheating wouldn't.

And there sure seem to be a lot of such people.

Thompson even says that if Trump does this it would be one of the largest federal arrests in our history. He sure seems to think that there are a lot of cheaters out there planning to commit election fraud.

He and Trump agree, apparently, that voter fraud is a serious problem because Trump isn't threatening to jail people for NOT cheating, only if they do commit election fraud.

It really is striking how triggered the left is by Trump. As the Democrats move heaven and earth to put Trump in jail for bulls**t charges, they darkly warn that he might jail his political enemies.

The truth is, though, he only threatened to jail people trying to defraud the American people by committing election fraud.

Is this an admission, per Thompson, that the Democrats are planning massive election fraud?

To be fair, I doubt it. Rather, they are projecting their own ill intent to weaponize government against Trump, worried he might do the same. We have lots of evidence he wouldn't--see his first term. He didn't go after Democrats, although Hillary and Biden were both very vulnerable to charges regarding the mishandling of classified documents and obstruction of justice (remember Hillary's "bleachbit server?").

It has been the Biden administration weaponizing government and using outrageous lawfare. Trump is simply warning people that election cheaters are breaking the law, and unlike in times past when such behavior has been treated lightly, he will come down hard.

Kamala, the prosecutor, should applaud. As should Axios. Unless they like the idea of massive voter fraud.

Thompson seems to think it is rampant--he worries that people who commit voter fraud are so numerous that it would take a federal dragnet to get them all. Even I, a skeptic of the fairness of elections, only suspect that a few hundred people would have to be jailed. Axios' national correspondent thinks it would be much more.
