Too Many Democrats Stick With Rashida Tlaib

Plenty of Democrats disagree with Rashida Tlaib’s take on the Israel-Hamas conflict, and that is a good thing. A few have gone further and specifically called her out on her blatant support for Hamas, and that is a better thing.

But the number who are willing to call her out is few, and they don’t include the House Democrat leadership. And that is a very bad thing.

In general, I give a lot of slack to political leaders who choose not to take potshots at their fellow party members. In fact, I wish fewer Republicans were doing it right now. And however much I disagree with Democrats on issues, I normally wouldn’t hold them responsible for the idiotic things others say.

I cringe every time a political reporter tries to hold a Republican responsible for what another Republican says. I haven’t been thrilled to defend every utterance of Donald Trump, even when I think his words are being distorted. On the other hand, reporters do that all the time to Republicans, while generally sweeping under the rug any ridiculous utterance by a Democrat.

But Tlaib has sided with terrorists. Actual rapists, murderers, and kidnappers, and keeps promoting falsehoods despite reams of evidence that she is doing so. She famously has yet to retract her tweet that Israel bombed a hospital killing 500, and regularly repeats Hamas propaganda.

Why is no reporter chasing down Democrats and demanding they either agree with or denounce Tlaib’s blood libels? They would certainly do so if the parties were reversed.

And where is Democrat leadership on Tlaib? They all know she is lying. They claim to support Israel and admit that the hospital bombing was a misfired rocket from Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Yet Tlaib has suffered no rebuke from her leadership.

Tlaib has not held back on criticizing her colleagues; instead, she threatened them.

This goes beyond not wanting to criticize a fellow party member and reflects a larger problem within the Democrat Party: a large fraction of their base is antisemitic.

Rashida Tlaib is not the problem. Most Democrat politicians are not antisemitic, either. I trust that they are decent enough people to oppose the rape, murder, and kidnapping of innocents.

But they don’t oppose it enough to denounce the blood libels, and they don’t want to reject the votes of the worst members of their party.

There are few times that I honestly believe that one politician should be held responsible for the words of another, and similarly, few that I expect one to denounce another’s idiocy or even morally wrong behavior. How could I? I don’t blame the Republicans for not expelling even the execrable George Santos. That is raw politics.

But Santos isn’t aiding terrorists. Is it really too much to ask that more Democrats stand up to something this evil?
