Getting Hit by a Hardball Hurts: Investigating Officials 'Obstructing' Lawful Immigration Enforcement

Gracious! This could really be setting up some 'big talk, little do' sanctuary city types for an epic game of chicken.

It was less than a week ago I was marveling in wonder at Chicago's version of a bear-of-very-little-brain, Mayor Brandon Johnson, as he blithely waved a red flag at Trump's snortin' deportation fire immigration bull, daring him to do something about Chicago's burgeoning and - apparently - much beloved illegal immigrant population.

Can the dolt really be so dense, I thought to myself.

Well...yup. The Chicago City Council resoundingly voted down a resolution to assist ICE in removing criminal aliens, with Hizzoner's full approval and support as well of his overlords, the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU).

Chicagoans attending the meeting weren't so happy.

...The rhetoric at the meeting was off-the-charts hysterical from 'immigrant advocates' while the crowd in red sweatshirts didn't exactly act like churchmice. Mayor Johnson got back up to the mic to shout at everyone that he was going to 'have the room cleared' if people didn't simmer down. His doing so is becoming a habit at these meetings, as the citizens attending always seem to be really pissed off about something these days.

...The debate over the amendment included raucous speeches from citizens on both sides of the issue. Liberal activists who occupied the city council building constantly cheered after opponents of the proposal spoke and shouted down supporters. In one of the earlier speeches, a man who identified himself as “Mr. Chicago Conservative,” was forced to wait until the crowd died down due to his vocal opposition to the city’s sanctuary status.

Who are you loyal to?” Mr. Chicago Conservative asked. “The American citizens here in Chicago or the illegal immigrants here in Chicago?"...

Johnson was standing tall and talking big the day before the inauguration, too.

..."We’re going to stand up, and we’re going to protect undocumented individuals," Johnson said. "We’re going to protect Black folks, brown folks, Asian folks… Listen, the anti-sentiment that exists in this political space is unconscionable and it’s dangerous.

"Whether it’s anti-Black or antisemitic, we’re going to protect people, and we’re going to invest in people," Johnson continued. "The city of Chicago will be better, stronger and safer despite who’s in the White House."

I know the couple of Republicans on the San Diego Board of Supervisors are trying to find some way to unwind their newly imposed 'sanctuary county' policy, especially after the woman who foisted it on them conveniently exited her office, leaving them holding the bag with the incoming Trump administration. 

...In an exclusive interview with the Daily Caller, Homan said, "Congratulations, SD County. You just won yourself ICE agents all through your neighborhoods." 

Their "protection" policy is going to make border and immigration enforcement more intrusive and things worse.

The county sheriff has already said she plans to cooperate with ICE within the purview of state law, ignoring what the Supervisors have done.

Fox had a nice rundown of the bigger anti-deportation/immigration enforcement poseurs from Denver to Boston.

President Trump is taking on defiant sanctuary cities as he seeks to fulfill a vital campaign pledge to mass deport illegal immigrants while blue city leaders dig in their heels, resisting any form of assistance to federal authorities that could lead to migrants' removal. 

...The cities, from Chicago to San Diego, have doubled down by reaffirming local ordinances to prohibit local law enforcement from assisting federal authorities in immigration removal operations.

President Trump put illegal immigration front and center in his inaugural address on Monday, promising: "All illegal entry will immediately be halted, and we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places from which they came."

It might not hurt to keep it handy as a checklist, considering what is now breaking concerning the administration's next steps in the war on illegal immigration.

Homan wasn't kidding - pity the fool who ever thought he was - about going after officials who interfere with lawful federal immigration enforcement activities.

... Any declination must be put in an urgent memo - something that goes straight to DOJ leadership.

We've already seen the mayor of Denver climb back down his outrageously outraged mountain once he had a chance to rethink things maybe he shouldn't have said. He toned down the rhetoric significantly upon further CYA-inspired reflection.

 Denver Mayor Mike Johnston said he will encourage people to protest President-elect Trump’s planned deportations in Colorado and is willing to go to jail to stop efforts made by the future president that he believes are illegal or wrong. 

Johnston is also walking back his comments this week made to Denverite about sending Denver Police officers to the county line to stop federal forces from coming in.

“More than us having DPD stationed at the county line to keep them out, you would have 50,000 Denverites there,” Johnston told Denverite. “It’s like the Tiananmen Square moment with the rose and the gun, right? You’d have every one of those Highland moms who came out for the migrants. And you do not want to mess with them.”

In an interview with 9NEWS on Friday, Johnston walked those claims back. 

I wonder if there's been a collective, reflective gulp among like-minded crusading progressive civic servants in the few hours since this little note surfaced.

 ...The memo, dated on Tuesday and made public on Wednesday, signals an aggressive stance on Trump's hardline immigration policies by the Justice Department and raises the prospect of criminal charges for those who may interfere.

It said that state and local officials who resist or obstruct immigration enforcement could be charged under federal laws barring defrauding the United States or harboring immigrants who are in the United States unlawfully.

If prosecutors opt not to bring criminal charges following such investigations, they would be required to alert Justice Department leadership, according to the memo.
The Republican president in his first day in office declared illegal immigration a national emergency, tasking the U.S. military with aiding border security, issuing a broad ban on asylum and taking steps to restrict citizenship for children born on American soil.

The memo also reinstated a policy dating back to Trump's first administration under former Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
"Prosecutors should charge and pursue the most serious, readily provable offenses," it said. "The most serious offenses are those punishable by death ... and offenses with the most significant mandatory minimum sentences."

It's already supposedly causing a great deal of angst in states where they have sanctuary laws.

Acting deputy attorney general Emil Bove on Tuesday called for a major redeployment of Justice Department resources to immigration enforcement, including redirecting anti-terrorism squads.

In some of the first known actions of President Donald Trump’s Justice Department, the acting deputy AG directed the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Forces “to assist in the execution of President Trump’s immigration-related initiatives,” according to a DOJ-wide memo obtained by POLITICO.

That refocus could roil many of the task forces, since many members of those teams are state and local police and some are forbidden by sanctuary laws or policies from engaging in immigration crackdowns.

Bove also called on U.S. attorneys to prosecute “state and local actors” who resist, obstruct or “fail to comply with lawful immigration-related commands and requests.” The memo raises the specter of state or local officials being charged with harboring undocumented immigrants, as well as the possibility of lawsuits against localities that try to prevent police from sharing information with federal immigration officials.

Some CA cities are hopping on the ICE train pre-emptively in an effort to ensure they are not confused with the rest of the suicidal lunatics in the state.

Pretty much seems like we've passed FA time for these indulged children of the blue.
