Bill Maher and Don Lemon join the anti-PC crusade to save speech

And, lo, it came to pass that we agreed with Bill Maher. Maher, who at times has needled the PC police on issues such as alleged Islamophobia and other liberal orthodoxies, here asks roast master Jeff Ross about the PC plague on comedy. Guy Benson and I wrote a whole chapter in “End of Discussion” about just this, featuring an interview with Adam Carolla and quotes from a range of comedians who have been saying much the same in circles amongst themselves for a couple of years. I’m glad it’s all going mainstream.

Maher spoke with comedian Jeff Ross on “Real Time” over the weekend about Jerry Seinfeld, who said last week he doesn’t play at colleges because they’re too PC. Maher suggested the reason was political.

[Jerry Seinfeld hates political correctness. So we ruined 7 Seinfeld episodes by making them PC.]

“I used to fight with this audience all the time, because we used to get the audience strictly from liberal sources, then we got the audience like from everywhere and I’ve had a much better time the last couple of months,” he said.

Ross called comedy “medicine.” “You don’t want it watered down; you want it potent,” he said. “We have a responsibility to shine a light on the darkest aspects of society.”

Now, in perfect “End of Discussion” style, the lefty activist complaint about all these guys is—you guessed it— they’re white and male and pretty rich. Therefore, shut up.

But what of Don Lemon? Yep.

After almost 25 years in the news business, you know who is the most easily offended and the least tolerant: Liberals and progressive – because many of them don’t really want to hear anyone else’s opinion but their own. Here’s a tip, if you only agree with people who hold your same political affiliation or who are of your particular race, gender or ethnicity, you are part of the political correctness run amuck problem. You are actually thwarting progress instead of advancing.

Don Lemon has had his moments in the center of outrage storms, both right and left. Clearly the sting of the left that has left a mark. I enjoy Lemon’s ability to occasionally take a position that really riles the left, and have stuck up for him in the past when in the crosshairs of liberals outraged by his disagreements with them.

Good for him and Maher. That’s right. I said it.
