The American left's favorite terrorist group has been caught preparing to attack Jewish Institutions in Germany. Germany authorities arrested three people who were moving weapons to prepare for an attack.

German authorities have arrested three suspected foreign operatives of Hamas they believe were preparing a serious act of violence in Germany, prosecutors said on Wednesday.

The three men are suspected by prosecutors of being involved in procuring firearms and ammunition for Hamas since at least the summer of this year to be used for assassinations targeting Israeli or Jewish institutions in Germany, they said.

“In the course of today’s arrests, various weapons, including an AK 47 assault rifle and several pistols, as well as a considerable amount of ammunition, were found,” said the federal prosecutors in a statement.

Germany has laws that prevent full names from being released but their first names definitely give a hint of their background.

The three men, two Germans and one Lebanese national, were identified by authorities as Abed Al G., Wael F. M. and Ahmad I. Their last names were not disclosed, in line with German privacy rules.

The nature of the planned attacks isn't really spelled out anywhere that I've seen, but one story did refer to assassination attacks, so maybe that was the goal.

Hamas has apparently responded to the arrests. They claim to be shocked that anyone would accuse them of planning terrorism, at least terrorism outside of Israel.

Hamas said in a statement that the allegations against it were "baseless" and aimed to "undermine the German people's sympathy for the Palestinian people".

The group added that it had a policy of limiting its activities to what it considers Palestinian territory.

There's just one problem with that response. Four members of Hamas already went on trial in Germany earlier this year for similar plots.

Four men accused of helping prepare possible attacks on Israeli, Jewish or US institutions in Germany or elsewhere in Europe at the behest of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas faced trial in the German capital, Berlin, on Tuesday morning...

State prosecutors have said the suspects, aged 34 to 57, were "foreign operatives" of the so-called Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas' military wing.

They have said the men held "important positions with direct connections to the leadership of the military wing."

So it seems like Hamas has been organizing terrorist activity abroad. That trial which began in February is still taking place in Berlin.

So far the planned attacks outside Israel have been limited but Hamas is fundamentally an Islamic terrorist group engaged in a political power struggle with Jews in Israel. It seems possible that, as support for Hamas spreads in the US and Europe, the group might try to attack Jews living outside Israel as well.

I'm not sure why Germany is the focus of those efforts thus far but I hope the US is on guard for similar plots. There certainly seem to be a lot of left-wing extremists these days who could provide fertile ground for terrorists looking to recruit people to carry out attacks, not unlike the way ISIS recruited locals to carry out attacks wherever they were.
