'Who's Crying Now?': Joy Reid Is Out of a Job at MSNBC (Update: Shakeup Continues)

Townhall Media

We had this in the headlines yesterday but there's a lot more to say about it. First off, in case you missed it, Joy Reid's MSNBC show The ReidOut has been canceled

Joy Reid’s evening news show on MSNBC is being canceled, part of a far-reaching programming overhaul orchestrated by Rebecca Kutler, the network’s new president, two people familiar with the changes said.

The final episode of Ms. Reid’s 7 p.m. show, “The ReidOut,” is planned for sometime this week, according to the people, who were not authorized to speak publicly. The show, which features in-depth interviews with politicians and other newsmakers, has been a fixture of MSNBC’s lineup for the past five years.

According to Joy Reid on Bluesky, the final episode will be tonight at 7pm. Oliver Darcy reports the entire staff of the show learned they had been laid off through media reports. Only then were they called into a virtual meeting the network's president.

On Sunday morning, MSNBC chief Rebecca Kutler abruptly summoned staffers of Joy Reid’s program to an impromptu virtual meeting after news of the show’s cancellation leaked to the press. Kutler—who held a similar meeting with Alex Wagner’s show staff—sought to provide clarity on the decision and address employee concerns, but the conversation quickly grew tense and emotional, according to audio of the meeting obtained by Status.

Staffers expressed frustration and disbelief, outraged that they had learned of their show’s fate from reports in the press rather than leadership. Others demanded answers about the reasoning behind the cancellation of “The Reidout” and what it meant for their futures at the network.

You really don't have to guess why this is happening. Joy Reid's show had lost half its viewers since Trump's election.

"The ReidOut" has shed 47% of its total audience, averaging just 759,000 viewers after averaging 1.4 million viewers throughout 2024 leading up to Election Day, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Reid lost even more viewers among the advertiser-coveted demographic ages 25-54, losing a whopping 52% of them, now averaging only 76,000 key demo viewers.

Reid was reportedly offered a pay cut at the time if she wanted to keep her show. Presumably she accepted whatever they were offering but it wasn't enough. Two months later she's out. President Trump celebrated with a message on Truth Social, blasting Reid, Maddow and Al Sharpton.

Lowlife Chairman of 'Concast,' Brian Roberts, the owner of Ratings Challenged NBC and MSDNC, has finally gotten the nerve up to fire one of the least talented people in television, the mentally obnoxious racist, Joy Reid. Based on her ratings, which were virtually non-existent, she should have been 'canned' long ago, along with everyone else who works there. Also thrown out was Alex Wagner, the sub on the seriously failing Rachel Maddow show. Rachel rarely shows up because she knows there's nobody watching, and she also knows that she's got less television persona than virtually anyone on television except, perhaps, Joy Reid.

"Then there's, of course, the LOW IQ Con Man, Al Sharpton, who has, perhaps, the lowest TV ratings in the history of television. What is he doing to Brian Roberts to stay on the air? This whole corrupt operation is nothing more than an illegal arm of the Democrat Party. They should be forced to pay vast sums of money for the damage they've done to our country. Fake News is an UNPARDONABLE SIN!

Meanwhile, Elie Mystal and former congressman Jamaal Bowman expressed their sadness to see Reid go.

This response to Bowman was perfect.

Former Fox News host Megyn Kelly said good riddance:

I'm pretty sure she's referring to this clip which was a TikTok video not part of her show:

It's a bit of a mystery how Reid ever got a show in the first place. Remember she got in trouble for a bunch of stuff she had posted on her old blog and she then claimed that her site must have been hacked. None of her claims added up but Reid got a promotion from MSNBC anyway. She used her show to claim that, despite a complete lack of evidence to support her claims, the old comments on her old blog were "completely alien" to her.

She literally came into the job lying about her own blog and MSNBC was fine with it. As long as she would go on air and accuse everyone on the right of being a racist/fascist every night they had no problem with it. Meghan McCain says good riddance.

Several people are sharing this clip from last fall in which Reid suggested Joe Biden surviving COVID was just like Trump surviving an assassination attempt. This is the kind of insight that gets you a million dollar salary at MSNBC.

Reid is being replaced by a weekend show hosted by Symone Sanders and Michael Steele. Reid isn't the only MSNBC host losing a gig this week. Alex Wagner who has been a fill in for Rachel Maddow 4 days a week is losing that spot now that Maddow is returning to five days a week. She'll remain at MSNBC as a contributor.

I'll wrap this up with one a couple more from Clay Travis who suggests Reid's career path will now follow that of Don Lemon. In other words she's done.

Update: Joy Reid and Alex Wagner aren't the only people getting moved around today.

MSNBC’s new president continued to overhaul the embattled network Monday — canceling shows hosted by left-wing anchors Ayman Mohyeldin, Katie Phang and Jonathan Capehart, The Post has learned...

On Monday, an NBC insider told The Post that staff working for Capehart and Phang were informed that their weekend shows have been canceled...

Phang, who broadcast her show from Miami, was told her program will end as the network sunsets its South Florida-based operations. She will stay on as a legal correspondent while Mohyeldin and Capehart will host shows in new time slots.

This doesn't make much sense. Why cancel Capehart's very low-rated show only to move him to a new timeslot? If he's not working as a weekend host, where do they move him? The same goes for Mohyeldin. His show was canceled but he's also getting a new timeslot? It doesn't make a lot of sense unless, maybe, they are being combined into a single show with multiple hosts.. I guess we'll find out soon what MSNBC has in mind.

Update: And here's the crying. Reid defends the value of her show claiming she was doing God's work.
