Earlier today, we looked at the suspiciously large number of FBI agents and paid informants who were involved in the January 6 riot on Capitol Hill, along with other federal law enforcement personnel. One prominent figure suspected of being in that group was Ray Epps, a man captured on video multiple times both the night before Trump’s rally and during the attack on the Capitol Building. His participation wasn’t particularly subtle, either. But after initially being shown on the FBI’s Capitol Violence website (which is still up and running), Epps mysteriously vanished. This only added fuel to the imaginations of those who believed he was at least a paid informant if not an undercover agent himself. Well, this week Epps was finally arrested. But unlike all of his supposed “MAGA maniac” friends who are spending years behind bars, Ray Epps was hit with just a single misdemeanor count. (NBC News)
Ray Epps, a Jan. 6 participant whose removal from the FBI’s Capitol Violence webpage sparked conspiracy theories that he was a federal informant, was charged in connection with the Capitol attack on Tuesday.
Epps is charged with one misdemeanor count, disorderly or disruptive conduct on restricted grounds. He was charged by information, which suggests that he plans to enter a plea deal.
The criminal information charges that Epps “did knowingly, and with intent to impede and disrupt the orderly conduct of Government business and official functions, engage in disorderly and disruptive conduct…”
If you read through the full coverage in the linked article, you will see NBC News doing its level best to play down the role Epps played in the riot and paint him as a sympathetic figure. They even claim that he “attempted to deescalate tensions between the police and rioters.” You see, he was just a confused Trump supporter who got carried away in the moment or something.
Keep in mind that this is the same guy who was out there telling the crowd the night before the rally that they would need to be prepared to “go into” the Capitol. He was saying it again as the riot was getting underway. Of course, he never followed through with his own actions. He just pushed everyone else to go in and break the law. Though he didn’t enter the building himself, he was within a “posted, cordoned-off, and otherwise restricted area within the United States Capitol and its grounds,” (emphasis added) as stated in the federal charges. Others have already been sent to jail for less.
And yet, Ray Epps was only charged with one misdemeanor count of disorderly or disruptive conduct. He wasn’t even charged with “parading.” And everybody gets charged with parading if they were there that day. He’s entering a plea deal already, so the fix is clearly in and he’ll be let go with nothing but a slap on the wrist.
But hey… there’s nothing unusual about this at all, right? Totally normal operations at the Department of Justice. Here we have someone who was clearly identified on video acting in the capacity of a ringleader if not being one in name by issuing orders and sending people in to attack the Capitol and “bring us to the brink of our democracy being overthrown.” He was originally described as an avid supporter of Joe Biden’s chief political rival. And he gets to wander away with a fine and perhaps a little community service without ever facing a jury of his peers. Yeah… that’s totally normal in the current environment. It’s just more “equal treatment under the law” during the Biden administration. And don’t you dare ask any more questions about poor Mr. Epps, or you might be the one getting a 5 a.m. visit from armed FBI agents next.
