Obamateurism of the Day

We had so many good candidates for OOTDs last week, we really didn’t have time to get to the classic entry that Barack Obama created all on his own on Thursday:

Obviously, the first level of Obamateurism in this clip is giving Republicans a sound bite that will fit neatly into both TV spots and their constant criticism of Obamanomics and his lack of attention to jobs and the economy. It’s practically custom-made for the RNC and Team Romney.  In fact, it’s difficult to think of a scripted quote that the GOP would have inserted into Obama’s Teleprompter that would have been more damaging on this point.  Every time Team Obama starts to use distractions like Seamus the Roof-Ridin’ Dog, all Romney has to do is say, “Looks like Obama’s forgetting how deep the stagnation is this week again!”

But it goes even further than that.  Obama has been saying all along that he’s not to blame for the current state of the economy — that he inherited a much worse mess than people understood at the time, and it’s been a constant struggle to keep the US economy limping along even at this pace.  If that were really true, would Obama ever forget how bad the Great Recession actually got?  If it’s that forgettable, then maybe Obama should have had things fixed up by now … and if he couldn’t, why give him another four years to keep screwing it up?

Finally, Obama wants to cast Romney as an out-of-touch One Percenter.  But it’s Romney who’s talking about the economy, while Obama’s talking about gay marriage and a long-dead terrorist, while telling us that he sometimes can’t remember the economic pain millions of voters are still feeling to this day.  Who exactly is out of touch again?

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at [email protected] with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.
