Sunday Smiles

Stromboli

I saw this video as I was thinking about what to write this morning, and it struck me as the absolutely perfect intro for Sunday Smiles.

It's as if the folks at the Babylon Bee had scripted Gavin Newsom's words for him. And, for that matter, the non-reaction from Kristen Welker of Meet The Press was so on-brand as to be akin to parody.

What particularly stood out is how both Newsom and Welker seemed to be in a shared joke. Newsom had the self-satisfied look that came close to a smirk as he gaslit the audience.

Newsom knew he was lying. Welker knew he was lying. I assume that a fair number of Democrats are well aware that their "leaders" are lying.

So what does this say about them? Easy: they have contempt for the chumps who believe that they are being dealt with in good faith.

There's always some of that in politics, of course. You expect politicians to "spin." What makes this charade so odious is that Pravda sees its job as pushing the lies as credible because it has contempt for its audience. Politicians will do what they can get away with. Many, like Newsom, are con men.

What's infuriating is that the media, which claim to police the con men, are in on the corruption. They give the stamp of approval to Newsom, when if they did their jobs, he could be torn apart and embarrassed in about 2 minutes.

1. Claiming his office never used the term "Latinx" (2025):

During a podcast interview with conservative activist Charlie Kirk, Newsom stated that no one in his administration had ever used the term "Latinx," distancing himself from progressive language he once supported. CNN quickly debunked this by compiling clips and documents showing Newsom and his office repeatedly using the term in speeches, press releases, and social media posts as recently as 2024.

2. Exaggerating wildfire prevention efforts by 690% (2020):

Newsom and Cal Fire announced that 90,000 acres of high-risk land had been treated with fuel breaks and prescribed burns under his executive order. An NPR and CapRadio investigation found the actual figure was only about 11,800 acres—overstating progress by nearly sevenfold. The administration later removed the claim from official records after public scrutiny.

3. Misrepresenting California's homelessness reduction (2024):          Newsom touted a "dramatic" drop in homelessness on social media, citing state data showing declines in some areas. However, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's annual report revealed California's homeless population rose 2% to over 171,000 (the highest in the nation) undercutting his narrative. Fact-checkers labeled the post cherry-picked and misleading.

4. Falsely claiming lower crime rates in California vs. Florida (2023 Fox News Debate):

In a debate with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Newsom asserted California had a lower crime rate than Florida, even as FBI data displayed on-screen showed California's rate was double Florida's and far above the national average. He pivoted to long-term trends, but fact-checks confirmed the immediate comparison was inaccurate.

5. Downplaying his privileged upbringing as "hustling to pay bills" (2025):

On the "All the Smoke" podcast, Newsom described his childhood as one of financial struggle, with his single mother "hustling" on macaroni and cheese budgets. Critics highlighted his family's ties to the wealthy Getty oil fortune (his father was a judge and Getty family attorney) contradicting the rags-to-riches portrayal. Snopes rated the narrative exaggerated.

"Roll tape" is all that would be needed. Newsom lies so often that any competent media figure could rip him apart with little effort should they so choose.

Instead, Welker allows Newsom to smirk at the audience and declare that he is appalled at lying politicians.
