Obama on gun control: "This is just the first round"

Note that he said this today during a meeting with his counterpart in Mexico — the very same country into which his administration has flooded thousands of untraceable guns in an, at best, scandalously ill-conceived gunwalking program that has contributed to the rampant violence. How nice.

President Barack Obama vowed Thursday during a trip to Mexico to continue pushing for new, tighter gun control rules in the United States, saying his proposals’ recent defeat in Congress was “just the first round.”

Speaking following a meeting with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, whose country has been ravaged by gang violence supported in part by gun trafficking into Mexico, Obama vowed to return to the issue of gun control in the United States. …

“When you’ve got 90 percent of the American people supporting the initiatives that we put forward … I believe that eventually we’re going to get that done, and I’m going to keep on trying,” he said.

Yes, we’ve heard that before — although how they’re going to convince the Democratic senators who voted against the Toomey/Manchin proposal (nevermind finding any more Republicans to go along with it) that it’s suddenly within their political interests to vote yes, remains a mystery. They’re really banking hard and pushing the ostensible fact the the vast majority of the public is at least vaguely with them on furthering federal gun-control measures; and while, as Allahpundit already noted, some of the current disapproval over President Obama’s handling of the issue is probably from supporters upset that he hasn’t done enough, a successful second round still seems like quite the feat.

If/when they resume their attempts to Do Something, I’d assume they’ll keep it to (inanely) expanded background checks, sans trying to work in a Feinstein-style “assault weapons” ban again, which failed 40-60 in its Senate vote — as it very well should have, hem hem.
