Bookmark this now because when the day comes that Iran rattles its nuclear saber, the only grim consolation we’ll have will be compiling past statements of moronic false bravado like this. And no, Bush won’t be spared.
A case of Hillary going rogue and making threats The One’s not prepared to support? If you believe Jim Hoagland, no:
The president believes that Iran is developing a nuclear-weapons capability through its current U.N.-opposed uranium enrichment program, a senior official told me this month, and he will not accept Iran achieving the ability to make a bomb quickly from the stockpile it is accumulating.
The apparent solution: Stick and carrot, with the stick coming in the form of a U.S. “defense umbrella” over the entire Persian Gulf — which theoretically would involve us in a nuclear war to defend, er, Saudi Arabia — and the carrot in the form of the U.S. military releasing people like Mahmud Farhadi, one of the Quds Force’s top commanders in Iraq and therefore a man with the blood of possibly hundreds of American soldiers on his hands. And so we learn a hard lesson here: When The One told us he was ready to negotiate with Iran without preconditions, he evidently didn’t mean preconditions Iran might demand of the U.S.
