Hillary and Chris Christie show they have something in common

That photo with the headline of this post is of Hillary and Bill Clinton in Northern Ireland to commemorate the 25th anniversary of The Good Friday Agreement. I wondered why they weren’t in Ireland like Biden was for the commemoration but as it turns out, they were there. They just didn’t get publicity for being there until after Biden left.

Bill Clinton is photographed in one news tabloid raising a Guinness, a pretty woman leaning in to cozy up to him, in a pub in Londonderry. Bill is there with his old crony, Terry McAuliffe, and local elected officials. McAuliffe and his wife made the trip with Bill and Hill. Hillary wasn’t in the photo so I assume she was not there. I read that she was doing her events. So, naturally, to get some attention for herself, she tweeted.

Hillary Clinton tweeted her support of Disney over Ron DeSantis because she thought that was clever, or something. Poor dear. It’s a rather nostalgic and lame tweet from an older woman who often comes off as sad and bitter. It’s fun to see a very young Chelsea, though, before she grew up to be a run-of-the-mill progressive in Manhattan.

Cute family photo, right?

The publicity-seeking tweet underscores the threat DeSantis poses to Democrats in 2024 if he enters the Republican primary. They are desperate for dazed and confused Joe to run against Trump as he did in 2020. They are anticipating a re-match performance and retaining power in the White House. The best part of the tweet, though, is it is a reminder that Hillary Clinton will never be president.

Also jumping ugly on DeSantis over the Disney kerfuffle is Chris Christie. He is contemplating a run for president and says he’ll give his decision in May. He’s not running and he knows he has no lane to do so in the Republican primary. He likes being a talking head on ABC and buddying up with Democrats like Donna Brazile. You may remember we first got to know who Donna was during the Clinton administration days if you are old enough. She was Al Gore’s campaign manager in 2000. Then she went on to get caught furnishing debate questions to Hillary in 2016. Anyway, Chris Christie called DeSantis a liberal for going up against Disney. He said DeSantis was going out of his boundaries as a governor, that conservatives don’t try to dictate how corporations handle social issues. He said DeSantis was outmaneuvered by Disney’s Bob Iger.

Christie made the comments during an interview with Semafor, saying DeSantis was using the government to bully businesses like Disney. DeSantis’ conflict with Disney stretches back more than a year when the company sought to oppose the governor’s education reform bill.

“I’m a conservative, and I believe the job of government is, in the main, to stay out of the business of business,” Christie said. “I don’t think Ron DeSantis is a conservative, based on his actions toward Disney.

“Where are we headed here now, that if you express disagreement in this country the government is allowed to punish you?” he continued. “To me, that’s what I always thought liberals did, and now here we are participating in this with a Republican governor.”

“That’s not the guy I want sitting across from President Xi and negotiating our next agreement with China, or sitting across from Putin and trying to resolve what’s happening in Ukraine, if you can’t see around a corner that Bob Iger created for you,” Christie said. “I don’t think that’s very imposing.”

Trump has followed Christie’s lead and criticized DeSantis for taking on Disney. Disney gave a whole lot of money to Trump’s campaign and probably did to Hillary’s, too. As we learned from the Trump camp, money talks. Trump is in the process of trying to knock off DeSantis before he even gets into the Republican primary.

Christie went after Trump, too. Suddenly Christie is concerned about Trump’s character. Where was that when he was groveling for a job in the Trump administration after he had to drop out of the 2016 primary race? He was as bad as Mitt Romney was. They criticized Trump’s character then ended up supporting him and even trying to work for him. Now Christie is back to character.

As he considers his own potential run, he has signaled he will never support Trump again. On Tuesday, like DeSantis he brought up Trump’s ‘hush money’ payment reimbursements to Stormy Daniels – a move that brought furious pushback from Trump when DeSantis did it.

‘You have someone who has had an affair with a pornstar, paid her off $130,000 to cover it up, to keep that information from the American people … That’s not the character of somebody who I think should be president of the United States,’ said Christie.

Oh well. Just another day during the run-up to a full-blown presidential primary in progress.
