Spicy Latin American Politics Continue: Honduran Law Maker Ducking Bomb Chucking

This was an absolutely wild video I saw last night, and the violence in it was no doubt occasioned by the tumultuous, controversial outcome of the knife-edge Honduran presidential elections. The election itself was peaceful and orderly, amazingly enough, but was only recently declared over, and obviously not to everyone's satisfaction, nor that the results were on the up-and-up.

That, and probably the opposition just being really pissed about losing.

Back in the middle of December, I told you all how, when it had initially looked as if the conservative National Party candidate (and Trump pick) Nasry 'Tito' Asfura was well on his way to victory over the Libre Party (read: the ruling Socialists) candidate, and who Trump had basically called a decoy to split votes, a Communist in centrist clothing named Salvador Nasrallah, the vote counting came to a complete halt. Stopped dead.

It wasn't until the 8th of December that votes started trickling back in from the November 30 election and, amazingly, the conservative Asfura was holding onto his lead, although in nowhere near the commanding numbers he had prior to the count being suspended.

For all the rumored plans to split Asfura's support between them, the two other candidates trailed behind, with the ruling Socialist Libre Party dead last.

At least that message from the electorate was clear - Honduras was declaring itself done and free of the Marxist/Socialist experiment as had so many other Latin American countries in the past few months.

On Christmas Eve, it became official - Tito Asfura would be the new Honduran president, winning by a razor-thin margin.

There were, however, ominous rumblings from the accused-Communist-turned faux Centrist Nasralla.

Nasry Asfura has been declared the winner of Honduras' razor-thin presidential election, after weeks of delays following technical problems and allegations of fraud.

The conservative National Party candidate - backed by US President Donald Trump - won with 40.3% of the vote, according to the National Electoral Council (CNE), edging out Salvador Nasralla of the centre-right Liberal Party, who got 39.5%.

In a post on X, Asfura said: "Honduras: I am ready to govern. I will not let you down."

Meanwhile, Nasralla said at a press conference: "I will not accept a result built on omissions." But he also urged his supporters to remain calm.

Reading that comment, almost two weeks later, sheds some nuance on what happened yesterday to conservative Honduran congresswoman and Deputy Speaker of the National Congress of Honduras, Gladis Aurora López, as she walked out onto a porch in the capital, Tegucigalpa, for a press chat.

...The prominent Honduran politician from the right-wing National Party (Partido Nacional) currently serves as the sixth vice president of the National Congress of Honduras and is also a deputy to the Central American Parliament (Parlacen), representing the department of La Paz.

Watch the video carefully, and you will see a projectile appear behind the left side of Ms López's head, appear to perhaps impact her skull, and as she flinches and ducks, it explodes.

It's truly horrific, and a miracle she wasn't fatally injured.

How López didn't have half her head blown off, I have no idea, but she does have serious back injuries, lost the hearing in one ear, and suffered significant bruising. Those around her suffered minor injuries as well, which is, again, a major miracle.

Gladys Aurora López, a member of the National Party in the Central American Parliament (Parlacen), was seriously injured after being struck by an explosive device as she was about to enter the National Congress on the afternoon of Thursday, January 8, 2026.

The attack occurred amid heightened political tensions as members of the nationalist bloc and Parlacen deputies arrived at the Legislative Branch following a call by Congress President Luis Redondo to vote on a motion to recount votes from the general elections. Despite a strong police and military presence, disturbances erupted minutes earlier on the lower levels of the Congress building.

Lawmakers were gathering at the building to vote on a motion for a recount. Mr Nasralla is really angry about the entire election and has been agitating ceaselessly for a do-over.

...The incident comes amid political mistrust after the November 30 vote, in which centrist Salvador Nasralla has appealed to the Electoral Justice Tribunal seeking recounts in multiple departments after the electoral authority declared National Party candidate Nasry Asfura the winner by less than 1% of the vote.

This has naturally aggravated his supporters in turn, even as he himself mouths all the correct words about maintaining calm.

The ruling and soon-to-be-displaced Socialist Party has yet to issue a statement on the attack.

...A representative for the Libre Party did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

There were immediate accusations that pro-government activists who were gathered for protests outside the building were resonsible, and that the projectile has actually been launched from government offices. Nothing solid on any of that yet.

...An explosive device targeted National Party deputies during a press conference outside Honduras’ National Congress building in Tegucigalpa on 8 January. Deputy Gladis Aurora López suffered injuries including back damage, hearing loss in one ear, and a torn jacket after what appears to be a mortar firework or homemade explosive detonated near the group, with several other lawmakers sustaining minor injuries.

The attack comes amid political tensions following disputed November 2025 elections, with president-elect Nasry “Tito” Asfura set to take power on January 27th despite fraud allegations from the ruling Libre party. National Party leaders accused pro-government colectivos mobilized outside Congress of launching the device, possibly from nearby former ENEE offices.

This is her torn jacket. Dang.

Incredible  This is how Deputy Gladis Aurora López's clothing ended up after being hit by an explosive in the basement of the National Congress. The images show the state of her clothing after the incident that also put her integrity at risk.

One of the local television stations has aired surveillance footage and is calling for the person seen flinging something towards the building to be found.

Wanted: Alleged perpetrators of the attack! A reward is offered to anyone who provides reliable information about the identity and whereabouts of the individuals identified as alleged perpetrators of launching an explosive device against Deputy Gladis Aurora López in the lower house of the National Congress.

Nasry Asfura will assume office on 27 January if these recounts and/or any further outbursts of violence don't change the schedule or upend the entire process.

It is still Latin America after all, and the few remaining Comministas and Socialistas are backed into a corner across the length and breadth of the continent and isthmus.

They have always chosen the ugly way out.

Sadly, this doesn't look to be any different.
