Stacey Dash: I picked my candidate by the content of his character

Remember that time Rep. Paul Ryan called Dionne Davenport to chat?

Stacey Dash breaks the news to Alicia Silverstone that it’s Paul Ryan on the line.

Stacey Dash, the actress best-known for playing Dionne in “Clueless,” announced her support for Mitt Romney in this utterly innocuous tweet last week.

After that, her replies predictably and sadly erupted in abuse, with accusations that the black actress was betraying her race, was a “house negro,” “oreo,” and worse. You know, because tolerance.

Dash, who most recently starred in the VH1 drama “Single Ladies,” said she was “shocked and saddened” by the response in an appearance on Piers Morgan’s CNN show. Morgan was surprisingly sympathetic, expressing equal surprise that “one innocuous tweet from you, purely because you’re an actress and the color of your skin, sparked this kind of mayhem.”

In the wake of the mayhem, Dash said she got a call from Ryan, who “said ‘thank you so much for your support’.”

“I thought that was just so generous and kind. Lovely, really,” she said, with a smile on her face. Hey girl, I’d have a smile on my face, too.

Watch Dash explain that she picked her candidate “not by the color of his skin, but the content of his character.”

Best to the lovely Stacey Dash, who looks just as amazing as she did 17 years ago when I first saw her on the screen. I wish I had been surprised by the reaction.

H/t to the guys at Newsbusters for this video!
