About the Stephanopoulos Interview with Biden...Changes Have Been Made

Townhall Media

ABC News and George Stephanopoulos is a go-to safe place for the Biden administration when it finds itself in trouble. Unsurprisingly, President Biden will sit down with Stephanopoulos on Friday during a campaign trip to Wisconsin.

You may remember it was Stephanopoulos that the Biden administration turned to when it had to manage the public fallout from Biden's disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan.

George is a loyal Democrat. He's been honing his communication skills on behalf of Democrats to a national audience since the Clinton administration days. He was Bill Clinton's campaign communications director in 1992 and then Clinton's White House communications director. Before he left the Clinton White House in 1996, he moved to being an advisor for policy and strategy. He was known to be in charge of managing Clinton's 'bimbo eruptions.'

When the interview with Biden was announced on Tuesday, the AP reported, "Portions of the interview will air on ABC’s “World News Tonight” on Friday, with the extended interview first airing on the network’s “This Week” Sunday morning program, the network said Tuesday."

In other words, ABC would tease the interview by airing a little of it and expecting a curious viewership to tune in to George's Sunday morning show for the whole enchilada.

Well, that strategy has changed. Now the whole interview will air in an ABC primetime special on Friday. The situation is so serious around Biden and whether or not he should remain in the race that the original plan to release the interview in dribs and drabs through the week and weekend to lead up to the Sunday show is no longer the plan.

The interview will be taped on Friday when Biden is in Wisconsin campaigning. Wisconsin is an important battleground state, especially for Democrats. Hillary Clinton learned that lesson the hard way in 2016. The Real Clear Politics aggregate has Biden and Trump tied at 47.3% each. So, the interview airing schedule has changed.

The special will air at 8 pm ET/PT.

Of course, ABC being ABC, the network will still try to tease the talk with preview clips on World News Tonight with David Muir on Friday. The Biden interview will also be broadcast again on This Week on Sunday.

We are left with a White House in full deflection mode, insisting Biden will remain in the race. He will not resign. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Wednesday that Biden's poor performance was due to a cold and jet lag. That's right. She added jet lag to Biden's weakness. Never mind Biden had been home for two weeks before debate night. They truly think voters are dumb. Why wouldn't they? The White House and the media have been pulling off a sham of a presidential administration for almost four years.

We have all been lied to and the deception has been laid bare. There is no going back from that debate debacle. What is left is damage control. I would argue that we now face a constitutional crisis. How can Biden remain in the Oval Office after what we witnessed?

Will George put country over party and ask tough questions of the president or will it be the standard softballs meant to protect Biden? Will George remain a leading force in a complicit media? That is what remains to be seen.

Nikki Haley is feeling vindicated after Biden's debate performance. Last year during an interview on Good Morning America with George, the two had a tense exchange over her claim that "a vote for Joe Biden is a vote for Kamala Harris." She was right, of course. No clear-eyed observer thought even then that Biden would make it through another four years in office. That means President Kamala will be a reality

"There's no way Joe Biden is gonna finish his term," Haley said, "I think Kamala Harris is gonna be the next president and that should send a chill up every American spine. But also think the fact that we have a primary-"

"Excuse me, excuse me," Stephanopoulos interrupted with a scowl on his face. "How do you know Joe Biden's not gonna finish his term? What is that based on?"

"Ask Americans, do you think he's gonna finish his term? Do you think that he's actually gonna finish what he started?" Haley responded. "We look at the decline he's had over the last few years. You have to be honest with the American people, George. There's no way that Joe Biden is gonna finish out a next term. We can't have an 81-year-old president. We have to have a new generational leader. The Senate has become the most privileged nursing home in the country. We've got to start making sure we have a new generation. Everybody feels that- Republicans, Democrats and independents feel that, and it's time that the media acknowledge that."

"You all want to talk about Joe Biden and Donald Trump, we want to talk about the future of this country. That's what we have to start doing," she added.

Nikki was right. George continued to argue that she had no evidence of Biden's decline in mental acuity. It was ridiculous. What it shows, though, is that Democrats are more concerned about beating Trump in November than they are about saving our country.

Party above country. That is the Democrats' position now. I'm old enough to remember all those self-righteous Never-Trumpers saying that is a bad thing. Where are they now?

Will George ride to the rescue for Joe Biden again? I'll be tuning in to watch.
