Actress Julianna Margulies Speaks Out About Black Antisemitism and Feels the Backlash

Actress Julianna Margulies is feeling the heat after making some comments on the antisemitism she sees from black Americans. She dared to express her opinion about the lack of support by the Black and LGBTQ communities for Israel in the wake of the Oct. 7 Hamas attack.

Now she must be punished. I don’t make the rules. Margulies is Jewish. She was a guest on the Back Room podcast hosted by Andy Ostroy. Margulies commented that “the entire black community” may have been “brainwashed to hate Jews.” She pointed out that they would likely be the first people to be beheaded in a Muslim country. She went on to say that their heads would be used like soccer balls. Tough stuff, to be sure, but she didn’t say anything ground-breaking.

Her sweeping generalization that the entire black community is conditioned to hate Jews was what probably got her into trouble. White people aren’t allowed to criticize black people on just about anything. When making an argument, it is best to avoid generalizations because they are easily debunked. Are all black people antisemitic? Probably no more than all white people are antisemitic. We’ve seen people of all colors participating in anti-Israel demonstrations. Sadly, the massacres by Hamas in October and Israel’s right to defend herself have unleashed a wave of antisemitism that few realized was lurking just under the surface of civil society.

The antisemitism seen since October 7 has been an eye-opener. Most offensive is the general ignorance displayed by young people, college students, and those who will one day lead America. Decades of liberal power grabs on American higher education campuses has taken a toll. To some extent, Margulies is right about the brainwashing of Americans against Jews.

The actress answered, “It’s those kids who are spewing this antisemitic hate, that has no idea if they stepped foot in an Islamic country — these people who want us to call them they/them, or whatever they want us to call them, which I have respectfully made a point of doing — it’s those people that will be the first people beheaded and their heads played with like a soccer ball. And that’s who they’re supporting? Terrorists who don’t want women to have their rights? LGBTQ people get executed.”

Margulies then claimed that a “Black lesbian club” at Columbia University screened a film and “put signs up that said, ‘No Jews allowed.'” (The signs actually said, “Zionists aren’t invited,” according to the New York Post.) “As someone who plays a lesbian journalist on The Morning Show, I am more offended by it as a lesbian than I am as a Jew,” she said. “Because I wanna say to them, ‘You f—ing idiots. You don’t exist. You’re even lower than the Jews. A. You’re Black, and B. You’re gay and you’re turning your back against the people who support you?’ Because Jews, they rally around everybody.”

Later, she said Adolf Hitler “got his entire playbook from the Jim Crow South.” “In the civil rights movement, the Jews were the ones that walked side by side with the Blacks to fight for their rights. And now the Black community isn’t embracing us and saying, ‘We stand with you the way you stood with us.'” She added, “The fact that the entire Black community isn’t standing with us to me says either they just don’t know, or they’ve been brainwashed to hate Jews.”

“Here’s what kills me,” she later added. “These kids are calling Jews colonialists. If you’re gonna go with that argument, kids, then get the f— out of America. Because you were not here first. Native Americans were here first and you owe them a big f—ing apology.”

Margulies is absolutely right as she says that these protesters would be killed by Hamas. Hamas is on a mission to kill all Westerners and certainly all members of communities like the LGBTQ community. There is nothing more ironic than seeing a “Queers for Palestine” sign at an anti-Israel protest. Are you kidding me? They would be killed as soon as they crossed into Gaza. It’s the ignorance that is so disturbing. I’d venture to say that a large number of the young people demonstrating against Israel and Jews have no idea what Hamas believes to be true. The demonstrations are popular and framed as anti-war demonstrations so young people jump on the bandwagon. It has been like that throughout recent history. Remember the protests against the Iraq war? Remember Cindy Sheehan? It’s not Iraq now but Hamas in Gaza.

Margulies got a little weird when she declared that since she plays a lesbian on television, she is especially offended on behalf of the LGBTQ community. That’s a bit of an odd flex, in my humble opinion. She isn’t a lesbian so she’s bound to irritate women who are with that statement.

She’s right to call out antisemitism but she goes off the rails by making it all about black antisemitics. As we see daily, there are plenty of people to point a finger at without making it a racial thing. There is enough fuel on this flame as it is without adding more matches. Is she going to do the Hollywood apology thing where she apologizes because of the backlash and not because she sincerely thinks she made a mistake? We’ll see.

This isn’t her first rodeo. She penned an op-ed published in USA Today that addressed the silence of her non-Jewish friends since the October 7 massacres. She is right to speak out. She just needs to hone her message a little.
