Celebrity-backed woke bail fund has closed after being sued for freeing a serial criminal

The Bail Project, a non-profit California-based bail reform group backed by A-list celebs like Richard Branson, John Legend, and Danny Glover, has shut down its Las Vegas chapter after being sued by a waiter shot by a serial criminal. It discontinued operations due to restructuring in early December.

The group posted a $3,000 bond for 24-year-old Rashawn Gaston-Anderson in December 2021. Just six days later, he shot an Asian waiter, Chengyan Wang, eleven times. Gaston-Anderson pleaded guilty and will serve seven to 18 years in prison. Gaston-Anderson was arrested in November 2021 for burglary and theft. After being released on bond, he went into a restaurant and opened fire on Wang, almost killing him. Wang is suing and targeting The Bail Project for paying the bond of a serial criminal.

Despite the lawsuit that caused the Las Vegas chapter to close, the group is doubling down on its efforts.

In the lawsuit, Wang’s attorneys say The Bail Project used ‘no due diligence in determining whether Rashawn Gaston-Anderson would be a danger to the community and likely re-offend.’

In January, Cameron Pipe, regional director of the West for The Bail Project, called the incident ‘shocking’ and a ‘tragedy.’

‘It’s an absolute tragedy and The Bail Project, myself speaking for The Bail Project found it absolutely shocking,’ Pipe said.

One local outlet asked Pipe earlier this year how a decision like the one made in regard to releasing Gaston-Anderson could be made.

‘Every single decision that we make at The Bail Project goes through the exact same thorough review,’ Pipe said at the time.

Deputy General Counsel for The Bail Project, Katie Poor, said their organization is committed to providing resources and freeing those who are innocent until proven guilty.

‘We provide free bail assistance and what we call community release with support which includes rides to and from court, court notifications and we attempt to navigate services in the community based on our clients’ self-identified needs.’

Gaston-Anderson had previously stated he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He said the Bail Project did not offer him any services for his mental health issues. The Bail Project did not comment on the mental health aspect of Gaston-Anderson’s case.

Seven bullets struck Wang, with bullets puncturing one of his lungs and his stomach. He has undergone rehabilitation for his injuries.

‘I can still vividly remember when the first police officer on the scene immediately helped me stop the bleeding on my neck,’ Wang said in an interview. ‘And helped me put pressure on other ones.’

The Bail Project has released 51 people in Las Vegas since February 2021. According to a spokesperson, 91% of those bailed out have returned for their court date. It is one of other similar nonprofits that have sprung up as a result of the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement and the Summer of Love riots of 2020. Woke liberals began raising money for bail for those rioters who were arrested. Remember Kamala Harris tweeting out the info for donating to a bail fundraiser for the Minnesota BLM rioters? The wokesters believe that the bail system is wrong because it unfair for poor people to sit in jail while those with money and post bond will be released. The problem with releasing everyone on little to no bail is that it creates a revolving door – dangerous criminals are released back onto the street. There is no immediate consequence for crimes and criminals are emboldened. Why change their behavior if there is no punishment?

Crime is up in most cities across the country and this is a driving force. How many times do we read about crimes being committed by criminals who were recently released on little to no bail? It’s a common occurrence. More consideration is given to criminals than to victims of crime. We are a nation of laws until we are not.

According to The Bail Project’s website, the organization believes in ending cash bail and calls the issue ‘one of the defining civil rights and racial justice issues of our day.’

‘Along with our bailouts and direct services, we use the power of human stories and data to make the public case for ending cash bail and investing in communities and alternatives to incarceration,’ the group’s website states.

That’s fine for the woke among us but for most people, justice means criminal activity brings about punishment. In this case, Gaston Anderson has a history of criminal activity, including being arrested the day before he shot Wang. He was arrested for pandering and carrying a concealed carry, released without bail in that arrest, and advised to stay out of trouble. Ahem, really? The next day he was arrested again or burglary and theft. That is when The Bail Project paid $3,000 for his release. Six days later, he shot and almost killed Wang.

Wokeism is bad, especially in the criminal justice system. The results of the Defund the Police and the aftermath from the Black Lives Matter summer riots of 2020 have been disastrous for regular Americans and communities across America. It’s time for the pendulum to swing back to common sense and keep dangerous criminals off the streets.
