What in the world is Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene saying in her latest controversial remarks? I’m not sure she knows. The White House condemned her remarks made as she spoke at the New York Young Republican Club’s gala on Saturday night. Now she says she was just being sarcastic.

Marjorie Taylor Greene was referencing the January 6 demonstration on Capitol Hill that turned into a riot. She claims that the White House and Democrats hold her responsible for the mayhem of that day.

On Saturday night, the GOP lawmaker said the rioters who stormed the Capitol building on January 6, 2021, would have “won” if she had organized the event. “Not to mention, it would’ve been armed,” the conservative firebrand said at a dinner organized by the New York Young Republican Club.

What is she talking about? What would she have “won” that day. Did she truly think that a riot was going to be able to keep Trump in the White House after he lost the election? How would that have worked? Mike Pence didn’t have the authority to toss out the election results and show Trump as the winner. And, the armed comment. What does that mean? Does she support armed protests? She’s talking about her own colleagues in all of this. Does she think the rioters should have been armed when they were searching for lawmakers. Then what? Where does this train of thought end? None of it was going to “win” Trump remaining in office.

MTG provided the White House with an opportunity to criticize her.

In response, the White House condemned Greene’s comments, saying, “It goes against our fundamental values as a country for a member of Congress to wish that the carnage of January 6th had been even worse, and to boast that she would have succeeded in an armed insurrection against the United States government.”

White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates called her rhetoric a “slap in the face” to the police who responded to the riot and the families who lost loved ones. Nine people died as a result of the insurrection, both during the riot and in the aftermath.

Bates called on other leaders across the country “to condemn these dangerous, abhorrent remarks and stand up for our Constitution and the rule of law.”

She gave the White House an opportunity to virtue-signal about law and order. Good Lord. They are the same administration that supported the BLM movement during the Summer of Love. The vice-president even used her Twitter account to help raise money for bail for the rioters who were arrested. She allowed the White House to twist the facts about the carnage of that day.

So now MTG says the White House needs to learn about sarcasm.

On Monday, Greene accused the White house of “trying to weaponize a sarcastic joke” and said the “only time” Democrats support the Second Amendment when “armed Antifa larpers want to defend perverts at drag queen story time or when leftist Hollywood celebs and politicians are protected by armed bodyguards.”

“The White House needs to learn how sarcasm works. My comments were making fun of Joe Biden and the Democrats, who have continuously made me a political target since January 6th,” the Georgia Republican said in a statement.

She added: “I will never back down from my support of the Second Amendment. And I will never allow the White House, Democrats, or the media to continue to accuse me of something I had nothing to do with.”

The problem is that it didn’t sound like sarcasm, especially coming from her. Her brand is bombastic speech, usually to boost her ego. It’s right that she defends herself when she is wrongly accused but the escalation doesn’t help. She thinks of herself as a badass and yet she often just sounds unhinged. Words matter, especially in politics.
