'Mo AMLO: Abbott's order to send illegal migrants to ports of entry is "immoral and inhumane"

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) was asked about Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s executive order authorizing the return of illegal migrants to ports of entry. Per the governor’s order, illegal migrants apprehended by Border Patrol or other law enforcement along the border outside of a legal port of entry, are to be taken to a port of entry and left there. They are being dropped off on the U.S. side of the border by the Texas National Guard and the Department of Public Safety.

To many of us, the new order sounds like just the latest version of catch and release. But, the governor is making a point. If DHS and Team Biden will not secure the southern border and properly process illegal migrants, then border community officials will transport them back to a port of entry so that they can enter the country legally. AMLO, however, said that the governor’s order is “immoral and inhumane and a political stunt.”

“Indeed, he is overstepping the limits. He is not in a position, legally, to make such a decision,” Lopez Obrador said of Abbott, adding that immigration enforcement is in the purview of the U.S. federal government.

“There are elections in November, so they’re looking to sensationalize this,” Lopez Obrador said in Spanish. “They cannot count on us because, even though we are respectful of the sovereignty of the countries, we don’t support that there are anti-immigrant campaigns for electoral purposes. I consider it immoral … political.”

It is immoral and inhumane to allow the southern border to be out of control and fall under the control of drug and human trafficking cartels. It is true that Governor Abbott is running for re-election but he pursued border security for the Texas border all along his time in office. During the Trump years, Abbott found willing partners in Trump and his DHS. Border Patrol agents knew that their work was valued. Morale is non-existent during the Biden border crisis. Biden and Mayorkas have no intention of doing what must be done to secure the border and provide safety for border communities.

Abbott’s campaign responded to AMLO. The campaign says this is the equivalent of campaigning for Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke.

“It’s not surprising that the pro-open border President of Mexico is endorsing Beto O’Rourke, the pro-open border candidate for Texas Governor,” wrote Mark Miner, the communications director for the Texans for Abbott campaign. “While Beto O’Rourke and President López Obrador don’t believe there’s a problem at our southern border, deadly fentanyl continues to ravage communities throughout Texas and America. Governor Abbott will continue utilizing all available resources to secure our Southern border, including building the wall, deploying the Texas National Guard and DPS Troopers, and delivering illegal immigrants back to the border.”

It is unusual for Mexican politicians to meddle in American politics. AMLO justifies it by saying that “the immigrants who helped build “that great country” would not like this “anti-immigrant policy.”

“If there is a candidate, a party that mistreats migrants and mistreats Mexicans, we are going to ask our countrymen to help us there so that we do not vote for those parties and for those candidates,” Lopez Obrador said.

That takes some cojones, right? Just as other open border proponents do, AMLO conflates illegal migration with legal immigration. Those who are mistreating migrants are the ones who are encouraging them to make the journey to the U.S. border and then enter outside of a legal port of entry. AMLO sounds as though he is doing a campaign ad for Beto. He may be surprised to learn that Hispanics in Texas, particularly South Texas, are switching to being Republican voters. Why? It is because Hispanics who came here legally and went through the process are the first to be angered about illegal immigration. No one is entitled to jump the line and sneak into the country. Also, Republican politicians like Greg Abbott are campaigning on bread and butter issues important to all families, Hispanic or not. The election of Mayra Flores proves that Biden’s open border strategy has backfired on Democrats.

AMLO can take a seat. Texas landowners and taxpayers need relief from the flood of illegal migrants. Someone has to step up and do the job.
