I wrote about Mark Rober’s first fart-spray-glitter-bomb aimed at package thieves back in 2018. Rober’s initial creation was in response to having a package stolen off his own porch. That particular year I had also been scammed by an Amazon seller who was selling new drones but actually delivering boxes with just a plastic wristband inside. I got my money back but in that case but the feeling of being scammed by thieves just before Christmas was one I could really relate to that year.

Since then Rober has revised and improved on his design each year. This year he’s improved things once again by creating a new gravity feed glitter cup that can be fired three times instead of only once. He’s also added a car horn, more fart spray and this year’s big addition: Pneumatic plungers that push the box lid up and away as soon as someone starts to lift it.

After getting all of the preliminaries out of the way, we eventually do get to lots of video of dirt-bag porch pirates having a bad day. And as always, it’s good to see a bit of instant karma. Anyone who steals packages off another person’s porch deserves much worse but the combination of mess, stink and humiliation is a good start.

However, Rober had less luck with the organized smash-and-grab thieves in San Francisco. Thieves did break into his car a couple of times but he didn’t get any satisfying footage. He vowed that next year he would manage to get a few of these thieves. Once again, I feel his pain. I had my car broken into by smash-and-grab thieves about ten years ago. Even if they don’t get anything of value you still wind up paying several hundred dollars to replace the broken window in your car, which isn’t much fun. It would be nice to see a few of these guys covered in glitter and headed to jail next year.

Finally, one thing has definitely changed since Rober started doing this in 2018. His efforts have been such a hit that even a few of the thieves recognize what is happening when they open the box. Stick around to the end to see it.
