Rasmussen published the results of a poll today which found that 73% of Democrats are looking for a fresh face to represent the party in 2020. That’s bad news for Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden and will hopefully be enough to prevent Hillary Clinton from talking herself into a 3rd run:

Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden are among those touted as serious Democratic presidential contenders in 2020, but three-out-of-four Democrats think their party needs to turn to someone new.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 73% of Likely Democratic Voters believe their party should look for a fresh face to run for president in 2020. Just 16% disagree and think the party should promote a candidate who has already run in the past…

Democrats are closely divided over Clinton’s impact: 33% think she’s been good for their party, but 39% believe she’s been bad for it instead…

Women believe even more strongly than men that Democrats need to find a fresh face for 2020. There’s little difference of opinion on this question among voters of all ages.

Black Americans are also very likely to say the party needs a fresh face. So it’s going to be tough out there for out there for Joe Biden or Bernie Sanders and Hillary shouldn’t even be thinking about it. I can think of one figure who fits checks several of the boxes outlined in this poll, i.e. a fresh face who could win over women and black Democrats. She’s pictured above.

Sen. Kamala Harris has been planning to run for president for at least a year. Last May McClatchy ran a story suggesting she was making the first moves. And in July there were reports she was meeting with Clinton donors in the Hamptons. “She’s running for president. Take it to the bank,” one fundraiser told the Hill.

Harris did face some instant backlash from the Bernie Sanders crowd who felt she was too moderate on issues like single-payer. But she has continued to try to walk that fine line between thrilling the base in deep blue California and not getting too far out over he skis.

For instance, Harris recently called for “a complete overhaul” of ICE but stopped short of saying it should be abolished entirely. That sounds a lot like the way Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama might approach this, i.e. claiming some sort of rhetorical middle ground while also claiming to be the change candidate. It’s the kind of incrementalism that doesn’t fly with the Bernie Bros in the primaries but which sounds moderate enough to avoid writing off the entire middle in the general election.
